Hinsdale Declares State of Emergency, Opens Operations Center

Residents are urged to stay in place during the flood. Use 911 and emergency services if needed. Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Hinsdale on Thursday officially declared a State of Emergency, according to a notice from the village.

Village President Tom Cauley made the declaration, and the Emergency Operation Center is now active. The Center addresses current concerns surrounding the weather and flood conditions in the area.

The public is urged to stay or shelter in place during this flood event and utilize emergency services and 911 if warranted. Local flooding is widespread and public safety officials advise the public to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during this incident.

Emergency evacuation shelter is now currently available at Benedictine College, 5700 College Road, Lisle.

There are many low-lying roadways that are impassable due to flooding.  Emergency responders assisted with the evacuation of Graue Mill Condo Association (north of Ogden, east of York Road) due to rising water levels of Salt Creek.

Between midnight and 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the Hinsdale Police Department responded to the following storm-related events:

  • Six motorist assists
  • Two property damage accidents (one on Ogden Avenue at Salt Creek)
  • 26 fire department assists
  • 12 public works assists
  • Six citizen assists

As a reminder, the following points are being provided as guidelines during this emergency:

  • Do not attempt to traverse any high standing water by vehicle or while on foot.
  • Do not enter or access flooded basements because of electrical concerns that may cause electrocution. If these conditions exist call 911 for assistance from the Fire Department.
  • The Fire Department cannot assist with removal of water from a basement and will only respond to emergency calls.

Residents are encouraged to photograph damages to property.
