Hinsdale, Burr Ridge Reach Agreement on KLM Platform Tennis Courts

The Burr Ridge Village Board voted 4-0 to approve a resolution adopting an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the the Village of Hinsdale and the Village of Burr Ridge for the installation of two additional platfrom tennis courts at Katherine Legge Memorial park.

The park is in Hinsdale, but Burr Ridge residents on nearby Laurie Lane have said the courts plauge them with light, sound and drainage problems and asked for some limitations when two additional courts were first proposed. The details of the agreement were discussed at a  in January.

“We didn't get everything we wanted, it was a compromise, but I think we did all right,” said Village Administrator Steve Stricker, adding that there is really little Burr Ridge can do as the courts are not on their property.

Although the resolution was approved, all four Burr Ridge trustees in attendance expressed their frustration with the agreement.

“I think it's a very bad agreement, the courts don't belong there and if this wasn't a compromise accepted by the residents that live there I wouldn't vote for it,” said Trustee Bob Sodikoff. “Hindsdale was very inconsiderate to the residents that live there when they proposed this.”

Trustee Bob Grela added that after agreement is final, the Village of Burr Ridge should make sure that residents of Laurie Lane know who to contact if there are continued noise issues or violations of the agreement.

“I would hope that in the event [the agreement is accepted] that it's posted on Twitter or our Website, and residents are informed as to who should be called … if the agreement is not being met," he said. "[A violation] would not be taking place in Burr Ridge so I want to make sure they have the number of the Hinsdale mayor, trustees and police chief so they can call them at 10:30 at night if there is a problem.”

Trustee Dave Allen, who was serving at his final board meeting as he did not run for re-election, lives on Laurie Lane and was heavily involved in the neighborhood's side of the negotiations. He said all but one resident was OK moving forward with the agreement, but everyone said that they did not want to see any more courts.

The IGA specifies that no more courts can be built for five years, but unless the agreement is renewed at that time, Hinsdale will be able to allow the construction of additional courts.

The agreement also outlines the placement of additional landscaping, stormwater mitigation and that timed lights be placed on the courts so that play will cease at posted hours.
