Charges in Aggravated Battery of Police Officer

Two 19-year-old men were charged with aggravated battery of a police officer after an incident at a Clarendon Hills home that stemmed from a retail theft at Jewel, 303 Holmes Ave.

Jewel employees reported seeing Kelechukwu A. Akuba, of the 300 block of East Daisy Circle in Romeoville, take a bottle of liquor from the grocery store at 10:48 a.m. When Clarendon Hills Police found and confronted him near the intersection of 55th Street and Clarendon Hills Road, Akuba ran into a home in the 5600 block of Clarendon Hills Road. Akuba slammed the door behind him, hitting an officer who was chasing him.

While that officer tracked down Akuba in the house, his partner was outside, keeping the homeowner from going back inside. At that time, around 11 a.m., the homeowner's son and Kelechukwu's friend, Leroy M. Burton of the 5600 block of Clarendon Hills Road, allegedly pushed the officer who was outside.

Both Akuba and Burton were charged with felony aggravated battery of a police officer and resisting arrest. Akuba was also charged with retail theft. Both were transported to DuPage County Jail.
