[UPDATED] Official: Woman in Critical Condition after Route 126 Crash

Plainfield fire department, Illinois State Police responded to head-on collision at 143rd Street early Saturday morning.

A woman was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital in critical condition Saturday following a head-on crash on Route 126 at 143rd Street.

Chief Jon Stratton said the woman was heading east on Main Street/Route 126 in a Nissan Sentra at around 6:51 a.m. when a westbound Nissan Altima crossed over and hit her vehicle head on.

The male driver of the Altima was taken to Adventist hospital in fair condition, Stratton said. There were no other occupants in the vehicles.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Martez Malone said the drivers' injuries did not appear life threatening.

The driver of the Altima told police he thought he might have fallen asleep at the wheel, Malone said. As of Saturday afternoon, no citations had been issued in the crash, police said.

Stratton said Main Street/Route 126 was down to one lane for about half an hour following the crash, with assisting with traffic control.

Stratton said while there have been numerous serious crashes on Route 126 in recent months, the intersection at 143rd Street, located east of Route 59, isn't a particularly treacherous one.

"It's actually a straight area and an open shot [with] good visibility," he said.

Shannon, This "intersection" will be upgraded and brought up to 2013(14) standards as it is planned to be part of the 143 St. extension project (Rt. 59 to 126) currently in stage 2 planning. An update on this project would be appreciated along with a status review on Rt.30 widening/ construction (Rt 59 to Rt 55) project.

@Ed Arter - When are we going to start your campaign for Plainfield Township Highway Commissioner? Election is coming up in April and there's alot of people hoping you run.

They cross right next to the Plainfield Quarry. 143rd comes in at an angle. It's very close to where the power lines are. That part of 143rd eventually goes down and the turns to become the frontage road that goes all the way to Lockport Rd. There are a few industrial yards down there including one for a bus company.

Isn't Sam Reichert the current Highway Commissioner Mr. Ram Seichert? :)

@ Nicole - Unfortunately he is, he is but his term is ending soon. Time for someone who is competent to fill that office.
