How Many Drinks Will Get You A DUI? (Chart)

If you insist on driving after a few drinks, here's what you should know about how alcohol affects your system—and your criminal record

Do you know how many drinks you can have before you're in danger of being busted for drunken driving?

When police pull over drivers for suspected drunken driving, officers ask them to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test to measure blood alcohol content.

A BAC test measures the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. The legal limit in Illinois is 0.08.

According to the Virginia Tech Alcohol Abuse Prevention website, every 40 minutes, 0.01 percent of alcohol leaves your system.

The limit for people under 21 is 0.02. But any alcohol consumption will get you charged if you're underage.

These charts show—in general—how many drinks it takes to become too impaired to drive. They're not exact, and they don't take a person's tolerance into account.

Police say the best way to keep yourself, your passengers and other motorists safe —and avoid a drunken driving charge—is to not drive after you've been drinking.

Get home safe. Plug these cab company phone numbers into your phone before you go out on New Year's Eve.

Very good advice. I hope 100% of the party goers will use this advice chart or have a designated driver. I feel sorry for people that don't drink. When they get up the next morning, that is how they are going to feel all day. But after having a hangover, you will feel better and better as the day goes on. You have something to look foreward to. LOL Happy New Year to all, and be safe. God Bless America!!!!

I agree with STM - non-drinkers get stuck remembering everything and they miss out on that raw-egg and tobasco sauce combo. Good stuff, Maynard.

Amateur night! We stay home where we can have a lovely meal, drinks and are safe from the crackpots. Would rather be home with my family any day of the week! Happy 2013!

I don't feel sorry for me for not drinking..I remember well the headaches, the pounding headaches and not being able to function well the next day. Not good when you have small children. Not good if you have to work on New Years Day like so many do. I hate headaches, so I don't like drinking to drunkenness. But I can still have fun. But I prefer it with friends around a table playing cards or board games. I never did like going to bars much unless I was going to dance and meet friends. How can anyone just sit for hours on end at a bar and drink. BORING!!
