Two Burglaries Reported at Hinsdale Apartment Complex: Police Blotter

Forced entry was used in both incidents, police said. Here are more details.

Police are investigating two burglaries at a Hinsdale apartment complex that investigators think might be related.

The burglaries both involved forced entry in a detached area of the complex, located on the 300 block of West 59th Street. One of the structures was a garage and the other was a maintenance area, according to Hinsdale police.

"We believe that they're probably related and probably committed by the same person," Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said of the burglaries. "The maintenance shed and the garage are in close proximity to each other."

The garage incident took place sometime between 7 p.m. April 3 and 9:15 a.m. April 30. A woman found the garage door was forced open with a prying tool. She discovered some of her belongings from her vehicle's center compartment scattered on the seat, but nothing was missing. There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle, police said.

The maintenance room incident took place sometime between 5 p.m. April 30 and 9:15 a.m. May 1. A maintenance worker found pry marks on the door and the doorjamb molding was broken. Shelving and spare trim were found in disarray on the floor, but a half-pack of cigarettes was the only item reported missing.

"It's unclear what (the burglar's) motive was," Wodka said of the incidents.

As of May 2, there were six residential burglaries in Hinsdale, Wodka said. The pace of burglaries is one more than last year at this time when there was five burglaries through April 30, 2012.

The two apartment incidents were not classified as residential incidents because the garage area they took place in is separate from the actual living quarters, Wodka said.
