Hinsdale Bombing Suspect's Utah Sentencing Delayed Again

James Zajac is awaiting trial on charges he was responsible for an explosion at the Hinsdale Metra station in 2006.

As James Zajac awaits a federal trial in Chicago on charges he set off an explosive at the Hinsdale Metra Station, his sentencing on a similar conviction in Utah remains on hold.

A Department of Justice spokesman said Zajac's scheduled sentencing on Wednesday was postponed, because he has not been transported from Chicago to Salt Lake City. A February hearing was delayed for the same reason.

No new sentencing date has been set, and his appeal on the Utah conviction is also in a holding pattern. Records do not specify exactly what length of sentence prosecutors want, but Zajac does face a minimum of 30 years in federal prison for the most serious of the six convictions. Zajac has a May 6 hearing scheduled in Chicago.

In October, a jury convicted Zajac on six felony counts related to the use and possession of an explosive device for purposes of damaging a Salt Lake City library in 2006. The incident occurred two weeks after Zajac is suspected of blowing up a device in a garbage can at the Hinsdale train stop.

Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom and Det. Joe Rauen traveled from Hinsdale to Utah to testify at the trial that convicted Zajac. You can read more on that here.
