'Higher Than Normal' Number of Burglaries in 2013: Hinsdale Chief

There have been four burglaries and four attempted burglaries in Hinsdale so far in 2013.

There have been eight combined attempted and successful residential burglaries in Hinsdale so far this year, which Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said is a “higher than normal” rate for the village.

To date in 2013, there have been five residential burglaries in town: Jan. 12 in the 300 block of South County Line Road, Feb. 8 in the 200 block of East Hickory Street, Feb. 24 in the 500 block of North Garfield Street, March 8 in the 100 block of East Walnut Street, and March 16 in the 500 block of Wedgewood Court.

There have also been three unsuccessful burglary attempts which took place Jan. 4 in the 800 block of South Bruner Street, Feb. 5 or Feb. 6 in the 400 block of East Hickory, and Feb. 6 in the 500 block of North County Line.

Bloom said at a March 18 Village of Hinsdale Zoning and Public Safety (ZPS) Committee meeting that most have happened in the early evening during brief time frames when residents leave the home.

The chief encouraged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious persons when backing out of their driveways, to utilize alarm systems, and to report to police anything or anyone that seems odd.

“We would rather get 100 false alarm calls than have someone be concerned that they’re bothering us and not call us,” Bloom said.

Bloom discussed the recent arrest of a 15-year-old Latin King charged with a March 15 burglary in Western Springs. He said his department is not sure if gang members are targeting Hinsdale, though most of the local offenses appear to have been carried out by burglars who have little experience, and may have a four-legged companion.

“In some cases we’re seeing what appear to be dog prints next to the actual shoe impressions,” Bloom said.

The department has alerted the community through press releases and social media posts, but Bloom said at this point he does not think it's necessary to use the department’s Community Alert Network to inform residents about the burglary trend.

“I don’t want people to think it’s at that level,” he said.
