High School Fight, Copper Pipe Theft Reported by Hinsdale Police

DUI, possession of cannabis, and criminal trespassing are also among recent offenses reported by the Hinsdale Police Department.

Battery—Two female Hinsdale Central students were charged with fighting after a physical confrontation in the school’s cafeteria at 11:55 a.m. Jan. 9, according to the .

The two suspects are juveniles; one is a 15-year-old from Westmont and the other is a 16-year-old from Hinsdale. The fight was observed by other students and was broken up quickly, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said.

Wodka said if a fight only violates school rules of conduct, the school disciplines the students. In this case, the fight was criminal and the school's police liaison was brought in.

Both suspects declined any medical attention and were released to appear in court for violating a local ordinance. 

Burglary—An unknown suspect is believed to have taken a large amount of copper pipe from two unoccupied homes currently under construction in the 5500 block of Barton Lane between 4 p.m. Jan. 14 and 11:09 a.m. Jan. 15.

A patrolling Hinsdale Police officer observed service doors to the construction site ajar, though no forced entry was made into the homes themselves, Wodka said.  

The exact amount and value of the missing pipe was unavailable at the time of the department’s report. In March 2011, In that case, 40 sections of pipe were estimated to be worth $2,500.

Theft—An unknown suspect is believed to have stolen a wallet from the purse of a female victim while the victim was at Starbucks, 500 E. Ogden Ave. Suite B., between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and used a credit card inside to make more than $2,000 in purchases.

The purse was hanging on the back of the victim’s chair when the wallet was taken, police said. The suspect made four purchases that totaled $2,005.71.

Theft—An unknown suspect is believed to have stolen the $200 cell phone of a female victim along with $25 cash while the victim was a patient at Manor Care of Hinsdale, 600 W. Ogden Ave., between 2:58 a.m. and 9 a.m. Jan. 12.

DUI—Lyndon D. Taylor, of 7 Yorkshire Woods Dr. in Oak Brook, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was observed to be under the influence of alcohol and refused a breath test during a speeding stop near Ogden Avenue and Washington Street at 12:04 a.m. Jan. 12.

Taylor, 61, was charged with speeding in addition to DUI and was released to appear in court.

Possession of cannabis—Amanda T. Papuga, of 29 Croydon Ln. in Oak Brook, was found to be in possession of a cigar containing a mix of tobacco and cannabis during a traffic stop for driving with expired plates near Ogden Avenue and Madison Street at 10:02 a.m. Jan. 11.

Papuga, 31, was charge with possession of cannabis and driving with an expired registration. She was released to appear in court.

Criminal trespass—An unknown white male in his 50s was spotted and confronted by a female employee of an office located at 15 Salt Creek Lane Suite 316 when the employee spotted the suspect inside the office while it was closed at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 9.

Wodka said the suspect told the employee, who reported the incident to police on Jan. 12, that he had been hired to perform maintenance work in the building but the employee later determined that was not true.

Wodka said the employee was worried there was criminal activity going on, but so far there have been no reports of theft or any other offense. The case is pending investigation.
