Joyce Skoog, Hinsdale's 1st Female Village President, Dies at 73

Joyce E. Skoog, 73, of Hinsdale died on Jan. 25. Ms. Skoog retired in 2002 as S.V.P. of Institutional Advancement of the Aspen Institute. She was the first woman to serve as Hinsdale's village president (1993-1997), and also served as a village plan commissioner, trustee, fire and police commissioner, and on the zoning board of appeals. Ms. Skoog served on other boards in the Chicago area and received the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council in 2002. She was a member of the executive council at Union Church of Hinsdale. The wife of Roy A. Skoog, Ms. Skoog leaves behind her four children, Cheryl (Peter), Linda (Jeffrey), Bradley, and Melissa (John). She is also survived by four grandchildren, William, Katie, Jack and Willa. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Adolf Funeral Home in Willowbrook. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Union Church of Hinsdale. Donations to the Joyce E. Skoog Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Chicago Theological Seminary are appreciated. An obituary for Ms. Skoog was published in the Chicago Tribune on Jan. 28.

Fredrick W. Ballantine, Sr., 89, a longtime resident of Hinsdale, died Dec. 8, at Oak Crest Manor in Spring Lake, MI. Mr. Ballantine (known as Ace) served as a U.S. Marine in the southeast Pacific during World War II from 1943 to 1945. After his military service, Mr. Ballantine played baseball at the University of Illinois, where he graduated in 1951. He moved to Hinsdale in 1954, after marrying the late Jane Boand, his wife of 58 years. A sales engineer for 40 years, Mr. Ballantine coached Hinsdale Little League and Hinsdale/Clarendon Hills Babe Ruth. He was a longtime member of The Union Church of Hinsdale. Mr. Ballantine is preceded in death by his wife, Jane. He is survived by their children, Fredrick W. "Fritz" Ballantine, Jr., Joella "Joby" (Jim) Nordloh, and Bro (Nancy) Ballantine; and their grandchildren, Tillie, Christie and Natalie Nordloh, and Daniel and Rachel Ballantine. An interment and committal service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Donations to Semper Fi Fund in Oceanside, CA, are appreciated. An obituary for Mr. Ballantine was published in The Doings from Jan. 23 to Jan. 29, 2014.
