Hinsdale Boy, 12, Meets President Obama, First Lady in D.C.

Jonah Schaik was one of about 50 kids who were invited to have lunch with the first lady earlier this month.

Hinsdale resident Jonah Schaik, 12, visited the White House for a special lunch and met President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama .

According to The Doings' Aug. 20 story, Schaik and his mom, Madelyn, were able to meet President Barack Obama when he surprised the group with a visit.

"It was such an honor and privilege to dine in the White House and meeting Mrs. Obama and President Obama," an email from Madelyn to Patch read. "It was a wonderful experience."

The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge was open to 8- to 12-year-olds all over the country who submitted a dish that was judged based on its nutritional value, taste, creativity, affordability, and the story behind it,according to The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge's website. Jonah's winning dish, according to the site, was Jonah's Pesto Pasta.

"Winners were selected from over 1,200 delicious entries, which were evaluated at D.C. Central Kitchen by a panel of judges that included Kass; Chef José Andrés; Marshall and Alex Reid, authors of Portion Size Me; Epicurious Editor-in-Chief Tanya Steel; and representatives from the USDA and the Department of Education," the contest's website reads.
