Award-Winning Deck Entertains on Many Levels

Homes with a hill or slope in the backyard can find it challenging to create an outdoor entertaining space that works with the terrain. Between comfortable usability and code requirements, creating a deck in this situation may require you to create multiple levels to accomplish your goals. “Whenever you’re doing a backyard project like this, it’s important to check your municipality’s requirements first, then find an appropriate solution, whether that be a single level deck, a multi-level deck, or maybe something as simple as a patio and pergola,” says Normandy Design Manager Troy Pavelka.  “For these homeowners, I suggested a multi-level deck as a solution, so they could still have the large deck they desired.”

“With multi-level decks it’s best to define separate functional uses for each of the deck levels before beginning, which will determine the size and layout needed for each level,” says Pavelka.  “In this case, the first level was dedicated as a landing and barbeque area due to adjacency to the kitchen, while second level was smaller and more intimate area to gather as family, overlooking the patio, pergola and hot tub.  The third and final primary deck area was the largest, offering an area to entertain guests and gather at times of celebration.”

Pavelka also created interest in the backyard deck design by incorporating unique, Asian inspired latticework throughout.  The final product proved to be functional and visually appealing, and recently received a First Place Remodeling Excellence Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, Greater Chicagoland.
