Supporting our Schools

One of the best parts about being a local business is being able to give back to your customers, schools and community.

It's that time of year again, the kids have headed back to school. In the Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills area, we are blessed to have wonderful teachers and administrators to guide the children each day through their studies, ensuring a great head start for their future.

Two generations of the Goers family have gone through District 181 and 86, and it is important to us as residents and local business owners to support the schools to continue our great record of achievement. One way Vern Goers Greenhouse has been doing this is with the Shop-n-Share program.

This fundraiser began in the spring of 1993, when Phil and Karen Goers contacted a few of the local schools and organizations about donating a portion of sales during the month of May towards their groups. Over the past twenty years of this program, Vern Goers Greenhouse has donated over $150,000 to local schools, churches and organizations.

How the program works is that a group passes out donation slips to its members, as well a bringing a few by the greenhouse in case someone forgets one.  When the members come and shop at the greenhouse, they turn in their donation slip when they pay for their purchase.  This is filled out with their total purchase amount, and at the end of the program, all of these slips are totaled and 10% of this sum goes to the organization.

The program runs in the Spring, during the entire month of May, as well as during the holidays, from Thanksgiving through Christmas.  Customers can fill out a new slip for the same or a different organization each time they come in during that period.

This past May, Vern Goers Greenhouse donated over $7,000 to local schools, churches and organizations like the Hinsdale Humane Society. When you shop local, you not only help give back to the community through your tax dollars, but with fundraisers like the Shop-N-Share program.

As the twentieth anniversary of this program rolls around next spring, feel free to sign up your school or organization.  What our participants have found is that the more you get the word out to your members or fellow parents, the more money you’ll raise just by shopping for your flowers or a few of the holiday gifts you need.

If you have questions about our Shop-n-Share Program, or would like to sign up, please call Kim or Sarah at 630-323-1085.
