Special Olympics Torch Will Run Through DuPage County, Sunday

DuPage County Sheriff's Deputies will carry torch through Wheaton, Warrenville, Westmont, Lombard, Villa Park, Elmhurst, Addison, Bloomingdale and Glendale Heights on Sunday,June 8.


Sheriff John Zaruba and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will host of the opening ceremony for the 28th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday, June 8. The Torch run is the largest year-round fundraiser that benefits Special Olympics.

DuPage County deputies will run leg 14 in the 16-mile course, which begins in Wheaton and winds through West Chicago, Warrenville (8:30 a.m.), Westmont (9:45 a.m.), Lombard (10:4 5 a.m.), Villa Park, Elmhurst, Addison, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights and finally ending back in Wheaton at the Sheriff’s Office.

Officers representing every branch of law enforcement, from local police to FBI agents, participate in the run each year. More than 3,000 law enforcement professionals run almost 1,500 miles through the state via 23 different legs carrying the Flame of Hope to its final destination, the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Illinois State Summer Games in Bloomington/Normal Illinois.

“On June 14, 4000 Special Olympic athletes from across Illinois will be competing at the Summer Games and I would like to commend the participants for their dedication and perseverance in accomplishing their goals and I wish them great success,” said Sheriff Zaruba. “I would like to thank the Special Olympics for letting us give something back to the special needs community and allowing us the opportunity to host the opening ceremony.”
