'We Never Thought We'd See Her Alive Again,' Owner of Rescued Hinsdale Dog Says

Sammie the Bernese Mountain Dog was swept away by a stream at KLM Park in Hinsdale and was found by Hinsdale police after she traveled through an underground drain pipe.

The Bernese Mountain Dog that was swept away last week by a stream at Katherine Legge Memorial Park and taken through an underground drain pipe is recuperating in her Hinsdale home.

Hinsdale resident Linda Lozier posted a photo of her dog Sammie to Patch's community boards Friday afternoon with the caption, "Sammie recuperating!"

Sammie's paws are bandaged in the photo.

"Aside from some trauma and bloodied paws, she is resting and doing well," Lozier had said in a comment on Patch's original story.

Lozier wrote in the comment about the incident, which occurred at around 9:15 a.m. Thursday while Sammie was off her leash and drinking from the stream that was moving faster than normal because of the rain that morning.

She said she and her husband were frantically searching through the rising waters near the tollway, where the drain pipe ended. Hinsdale police officers responded to the scene and eventually located Sammie.

"We never thought we'd see her alive again, after seeing how quickly she had been swept away through the tunnel, and how fast the water was rising," Lozier wrote. "When we heard that they had located her and were bringing her back to the park, after walking through waist-high flood waters to reach her, we were crying with joy."

She said she's "forever indebted" to the police officers who made the rescue.

"We are so fortunate to having such caring people watching over us and our loved ones," Lozier wrote. "Thank you, a million thank-yous, to the wonderful police officers at the Hinsdale Police Department."
