"I don't want to have just antiques in the store," owner Anna Stansbury said. "I want to have lifestyle merchandise."
Re-opening Oct. 16 in the former M Home space at 48 S. Washington St., the 15-year Hinsdale resident has taken an antique shop formerly housed in the Barley Twist space at 18 W. Hinsdale Ave., and turned it into a multi-faceted business that, in addition to antique furniture, offers interior design services, high-end consignment, and modern products to accompany the antiques.
"The village is really lacking this kind of store," Stansbury said. "It's really lacking the mix of old with new."
Displayed on top of the antique furniture Stansbury brings back from England, France and Belgium are soaps made from goat's milk, textured napkins, and even stationary headed with "60521," Hinsdale's zip code.
Stansbury said Village Antiques & Home is all about showing folks how they can make their home "warm and provocative" by using antiques with a contemporary sense.
"It's integrating old pieces into current lifestyle," she said.
Village of Hinsdale economic development director Tim Scott said the village is excited about Stansbury's move.
"With unique offerings, this should make for a complementary addition to the existing mix of independent establishments in the village that offer antiques, home furnishings, and accessories," Scott said in an email.
Stansbury's new approach means a larger staff: Village Antiques & Home has grown from a two-person operation to a five-person team that will continue to grow. Stansbury said she's currently looking to hire a part-time design associate.
The expanded operation will hopefully lead to an expanded customer base. Stansbury said the new store got off to a great start with a pre-opening party that was attended by 85 customers.
Most of Village Antiques & Home customers come from Hinsdale and the surrounding western suburbs, including Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge, Western Springs and La Grange, but that as antique shops have gotten more rare, her business has expanded to customers from north-shore suburbs, as well.
Village Antiques & Home is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
