Hinsdale Humane Society Hosts First 'Baby Shower' for Kittens

In anticipation of “kitten season” the Hinsdale Humane Society will its first “Kitten Shower” at the shelter from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27. The feline frolic happens at the shelter at 22 Elm Street.

Visitors can look forward to an afternoon of games, raffles, face painting, beverages and other treats celebrating kittens and raising awareness about the feline overpopulation crisis.

Kitten season starts in spring, peaking in late spring or early summer, and ending in fall.  is really three seasons in one, starting in spring, peaking in late spring or early summer, and ending in fall, the Humane Society of the United States says.

It’s a time of year when humane societies are flooded with unwanted litters of kittens that turn up under decks, in woodpiles, garages and anywhere else where a mama cat can hide and have her babies. This feline population explosion is due largely to unaltered cats having an overwhelming number of kittens.

Admission is free, but guests are asked to bring donations of the following item to help the Hinsdale Humane Society prepare for the summer’s inevitable influx of kittens:

• Purina Kitten Chow

• Canned cat food (pate, no fish)

• Gift cards - PetsMart, Petco, Sam's Club

• Liquid bleach

• Laundry detergent (HE: High Efficiency)

• Clorox or Lysol antibacterial wipes

“It’s going to be a fun-filled afternoon for children and adults, and a great way for us to collect much needed kitten care supplies, while also sharing information about the importance of spaying and neutering cats,”Jennifer Vlazny said, operations manager for the Hinsdale Humane Society.

Shelter hours are  2 p.m. to 8 p.m.Tuesday; noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.The shelter is closed on Monday.
