4 BNSF Pedestrian Deaths Reported in 5 Weeks: Year in Review
Among the victims was a 42-year-old Clarendon Hills man who was struck near the West Hinsdale station on March 18.
For about a month in 2013, fatal train-on-pedestrian collisions dominated the local news cycle in the western suburbs.
The first collision occurred March 7 in Westmont, when a 31-year-old Hickory Hills man was struck by a Metra train near the Cass Avenue crossing in an incident that was later classified as an accident, not a suicide.
Then, on the afternoon of March 18, a 42-year-old Clarendon Hills man stepped in front of a train at the West Hinsdale train station. Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said soon after the incident that witnesses and surveillance video suggested the man intended to be hit.
The next morning, on March 19, a 21-year-old Downers Grove man was hit by a train at the Forest Avenue crossing in Downers Grove, just west of the Downers Grove-Main Street station. In that case, Downers Grove police cited witnesses who said the man disobeyed crossing signals that were down, and police later said he likely intended to be struck, as well.
