Traffic Delayed After Five-Vehicle Accident on Tri-State

Three patients transported to area hospitals with minor injuries; WBBM reported 46- to 60-minute delay.

Southbound Tri-State travelers are still seeing 46- to 60-minute delays between Dundee Road and 47th Street several hours after a five-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon, according to WBBM Newsradio.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. after a tire came off a trailer that was being pulled by a pickup truck traveling south on Interstate 294 at 70 mph.

The tire flew across four lanes of traffic, causing the accident that resulted in three patients being transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, according to Hinsdale firefighter/paramedic Steve Tullis.

The accident occurred just north of 47th Street and, soon after, had Tri-State traffic backed up going both north and south.

According to Tullis, the tire crossed over into the northbound lanes before bouncing back into the southbound lanes. Two of the vehicles involved were semi-trucks. 

Sgt. Nick Hasan of the Illinois State Police confirmed that the tire crossed the median and struck vehicles traveling northbound. 

Officers from the state police and firefighters from the Hinsdale Fire Department were both on the scene. Ambulances from Western Springs and Oak Brook also responded. 

Two of the patients were taken to LaGrange Memorial Hospital and one was transported to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
