Walker School to Participate in Technology Demonstration at State Capitol

Walker School is among approximately 60 schools statewide that will participate in the annual TECH 2013 Students for the Information Age event on Tuesday, May 7 at the Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield. TECH 2013 is a not-for-profit initiative presented by Illinois Computing Educators (ICE).

Students will show the public and elected members of the Illinois State Senate and the House of Representatives how technology is being used in the classroom to improve student achievement. Computer workstations will be set up in the Capitol Building Rotunda so students may show how technology has helped them with their schoolwork.

Taking part in the demonstrations locally are Walker School third grade students Brett Klovanich and Cyrus Fallah, Media Resource Center Director Michelle Woodring and third grade teacher Shannon Paciga. Walker students have infused technology into the curriculum through the use of laptops and increasingly through iPads thanks to their participation in District action research regarding use of 1:1 technology. They have used the technology this school year to research various topics, such as planets, animals, and Japan. Students created movies using the iMovie application and are also creating other multi-media projects using the iPads to share and deepen their learning.

The purpose of the TECH 2013 event, Woodring explains, is to raise awareness of the critical role technology plays in preparing students to succeed in today’s world and to show the need for increased funding for classroom technology. Woodring notes, “This is an excellent opportunity for students to not only learn about technology and share their learning, but also to strengthen their understanding about the legislative process, how our government works, and how to actively participate in a democratic society.”
