Can Music Lessons Really Make Our Kids Do Better In School & In Life?

At Clarendon Hills Music Academy, we are fascinated by the research that is being conducted on how music lessons impact the growth of children. Here are ten ways that music lessons can benefit your child's development. We always welcome students to try a free lesson with us. Click Here or call 630-98-MUSIC today (Slots are going quickly)

1. Recent research has found a correlation between music lessons and increased spatial intelligence. Spatial intelligence, or the ability to visualize objects or patterns with the mind’s eye, is a crucial skill in many walks of life – from applied mathematics to interior design, a keen understanding of how different objects exist in space gives students a leg-up in life.

2. Music lessons teach children creativity and problem solving, which in turn helps them achieve high marks in school and on standardized tests.

3. Music lessons provide students a means to express themselves, from their personality to their beliefs, hopes, and fears. Composition or careful selection of pieces provides students an opportunity to creatively and uniquely convey their thoughts and emotions to themselves and others.

4. Exposure to various musical styles and cultures promotes empathy in children. By exposing young students to music of different countries and cultures, teachers help students see the world as a collection of unique and interesting individuals, rather than as an adversarial group of nations and races.

5. Early musical training promotes development in language and reasoning centers of the brain. Because the human brain continues to develop long after birth, we have the power to spur development in our children – including by introducing them to music at a young age. Recent studies show that music lessons spur development in the brain’s left hemisphere, which is responsible for reasoning and processing language.

6. Music lessons give students confidence. Many children are shy and hesitant to publicly express their views. Musical performance helps shy students break out of their shells by providing an opportunity to share their talents with the world.

7. Music lessons help children live the life of an individual, not a number. Artistic expression encourages children to break molds and reject social constructs, helping them to understand and express their own identity.

8. Music students learn the value of hard work. Without hours of dedicated practice, students are unable to become successful musicians. Music lessons teach children the value of hard work from a young age, imparting on them a sense that an excellent end product demands meticulous and concentrated preparation.

9. Music students learn to appreciate and apply great attention to detail. Music requires meticulous practice and attention to detail, which students will be able to apply later in life to excel in any profession.

10. Music teaches students how to take risks. Much as music rewards practice, it also values spontaneity. The jazz era geniuses would get nowhere relying on scales and chords committed to memory – they needed the guts to take risks and play as no one ever had. Students of music learn that risk and preparation are not mutually exclusive – in fact, they often go hand in hand.
