Fresh Thyme Farmers Market Headed to Ogden Avenue

Downers Grove green lights farmers market-themed chain to build on Ogden Avenue.

The Downers Grove Village Board approved a proposal for a Fresh Thyme Farmers Market on Ogden Avenue at its May 13 meeting.

Fresh Thyme wants to build on a vacant lot that sits almost empty at 321 Ogden Ave, Trib Local reported.

Plans call for a 29,000-square-foot, natural food marketplace at the corner of Ogden and Florence Avenues. In addition to the Fresh Thyme store, a second 4,500-square-foot building will be constructed on the property.

There will be four entrances to the retail development, including two on Ogden and one apiece on Florence and Fairview, Trib Local said. A much needed sidewalk will also be installed along Ogden Avenue.

The farmers market-style chain store carries natural and organic food and produce, natural hormone-free meat, seafood, grains and bulk items, and enviro-friendly cleaning supplies, Fresh Thyme’s website said.

Much of the store’s produce is organic and locally grown, the company claims.

Fresh Thyme has four suburban stores slated to open in 2015, including the Downers Grove location.

The Fresh Thyme company formed in 2013, according to the company’s website, and plans to build 48 stores in five years. The business is a result of a merger between the former Phoenix-based Sunflower Farmers Market and Sprouts Farmers Market, a group of more than 160 stores throughout the West and Southwest.

The company's is heavily invested by leaders of Grand Rapids-based Meijer, Crain's Chicago Business reported.
