Hinsdale Center for the Arts Closes

Hinsdale Center for the Arts abruptly closed up shop on July 20 due to financial issues and low enrollment, according to a Doings Hinsdale story published on July 25. 

The Doings quoted HCA board of trustees secretary Jan Tuthill as saying the board voted unanimously to close on July 18 after a five-hour meeting. Tuthill says in the story that the organization has been operating on a budget in the $700,000 range during fiscal year 2012, a decrease from fiscal year 2008, when the HCA brought in $1 million in revenue.

Tuthill says in The Doings' story that the decision to close is final as of now. 

Participants signed up for current summer classes have been notified of the closing. Enrollment numbers this summer were underwhelming, Tuthill told The Doings.

, the HCA opened in 1980 and is "1 of 40 designated regional arts institutions charged with serving the residents of DuPage and western Cook counties. 

"The Center hosts a plethora of cultural activities, exhibitions and events. Visitors can experience and explore special curricula and enrich their knowledge," the listing reads. 

"The HCA is supported by private donations and grants from the Illinois Arts Council."
