Downtown Gap Building Housing Hinsdale Artist's Mother's Day Show

The Maureen Claffy Fine Art Fair, which begins Thursday evening and runs through Sunday, will benefit two local nonprofits.

The doors of the vacant Gap building at the corner of 1st and Washington streets in downtown Hinsdale will be open throughout this Mother's Day weekend.

Hinsdale artist Maureen Claffy is selling her fine art, prints and jewelry from Thursday to Sunday and part of the proceeds will go to the District 181 Foundation and St. Isaac Jogues Council of Catholic Women's charity, "Women in Need."

The show is called "With Love on Mother's Day: A Celebration of Home and Family."

Claffy grew up and currently lives in Hinsdale. This weekend's show will be her biggest solo show to date, and though it was completely planned in only the last 10 days, the community has rallied through email and word of mouth.

It helps that the show's theme is something anyone can relate to.

"It's all about families," Claffy said. "It's Mother's Day. It's about celebrating the fact that we all need each other and that that's a beautiful thing."

Claffy's art is mixed-media. According to her website, the artist uses in her original art "acrylic paint, ink, watercolor, pencil, marker, metallics as well as binding and grounding mediums."

The gallery will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to selling art, Claffy wants to help sell the old Gap building that has been vacant since last summer. She said she hopes folks who attend will see the potential of the space that was a Gap for 21 years and once housed a bank.

"[The show] could revitalize a space that's really important historically and commercially for the village," Claffy said.
