In honor of Labor Day, Patch looks back at five labors of love—our picks for five charitable events that have made a difference for others in the past year.
1. Hoops for the House raises money for Ronald McDonald House
The annual Hoops for the House (formerly Hoops for Life) 3-on-3 basketball tournament, held at Grant Square in Hinsdale, hosted over 100 teams this past June. The participants played to raise money for a new Ronald McDonald House, which will be built near Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and will cost $30 million. Proceeds from the , which is co-chaired by Hinsdale Central alum Todd Schaefer, will help Ronald McDonald House Charities continue to support families of children who are undergoing medical treatments in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.

2. Rotary Run Charity Classic supports local charities
The Rotary Club of Hinsdale sponsored its this past October, which raised funds for the Rotary Club as well as the , l and the District 181 Foundation. The club for their work organizing the Rotary Run, as well as other accomplishments, at this spring's District 6450 Annual Conference in Sheboygan, WI.

3. Hinsdale South collects over ten tons of donations at food drive
Hinsdale South's National Honor Society and Key Club joined forces last November to collect 21,000 pounds of food over four days at the school's 26th annual . Members of other local groups, such as the Kiwanis Club of Willowbrook-Burr Ridge, , and the Rotary Club of Hinsdale, and residents of , helped the cause by donating food.
4. "Operation Warm Hearts" helps local charities with homemade goods
"Operation Warm Hearts" was , both residents of the Godair Park community in King-Bruwaert House. The women have organized a group of over thirty who make homemade knit and crochet items, then donate the pieces to local charities. Groups that have benefited from these donations include Loyola University Hospital infant care and The Cradle in Evanston.
5. HCS Family Services' golf outing raised money to support DuPage residents
' second annual took place this past June. The event, which hosted golfers from Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Darien, LaGrange, and Western Springs, took place at the and raised funds for the Hinsdale-based organization, which recently expanded from a food pantry to include services such as rent and utility assistance and homelessness prevention.
