Park Districts Keep Activities Running Despite Heat

Only skateboard lessons in Hinsdale were cancelled Thursday.

Park district activities in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills are for the most part going on as normal despite Thursday's excessive heat warning.

According to Hinsdale recreation supervisor Kurt Lindemann, the only activity cancelled in Hinsdale Thursday were skateboard lessons at Veeck Park that normally take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"The ramps get super-hot," Lindemann said.

The missed lessons will be rescheduled.

Other than that, Lindemann said, none of the youth sports camps put on by the district were cancelled. He said most of the activities are held between 9 a.m. and noon and then in the evenings after 5 p.m., so the hottest times of the day are avoided.

"Usually if it’s too hot, they’ll bring it inside," Lindemann said of activity leaders. "Some of our morning camps remain outside and can take breaks in the gym every hour."

Clarendon Hills' recreation supervisor, Kathy Forzley, said nothing has been cancelled in her village Thursday.

"The pool’s open. Tennis is going on with lots of breaks," Forzley said.

According to Forzley, the park district's summer camp and sports camp went on as usual, too.

This afternoon in Clarendon Hills, there are dance and guitar classes going on indoors and sandlot baseball outside, which runs from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
