This will be YOUR BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER !!!!

Santa is happy to present you, your family and friends with a   F R E E  concert by the ELMHURST COLLEGE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA on Sunday December 8, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at beautiful Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel at Elmhurst College campus 190 Prospect Avenue, Elmhurst, Illinois 60126.

Enrich your soul this holiday season, fill your heart with music from some of the world's greatest composers performed live by the college's top orchestra for FREE.

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra is pleased to offer an early Christmas present to all -- to you, your family and friends -- everyone is invited to enjoy a FREE concert - with full orchestra and special soloists.

The orchestra's Director, Joanne May, says "The orchestra members and I and thrilled to present a concert featuring the music of western European composers from Norway ( Edvard Grieg - "Norwegian Dances"), France (Paule Maurice - "Tableaux de Provence") and Germany (Ludwig van Beethoven - "Symphony No. 7").
Also included is a popular work by an all-American composer, Aaron Copland ("Saturday Night Waltz").
I'm particularly excited about the finale of the concert, when the audience will be invited to sing along with our full orchestra in a medley of popular Christmas songs.
Please come join us as we celebrate the Christmas season with beautiful music!"

Norwegian Dances, Op. 35 - Edvard Grieg
I. Allegro marcato
II. Allegretto tranquillo e grazioso
III. Allegro moderato alla Marcia
IV. Allegro molto

The first symphonic dance recalls the sinister sound of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Grieg's incidental music for "Peer Gynt." The other three dances are written in double time and convey the rhythmic vitality of Norwegian folk melodies.

Tableaux de Provence - Paule Maurice
III. La Bohémienne
IV. Des Alyscamps, L'Ame Soupire
V. Le Cabridan

     Soloist Dan Ricci, alto saxophone
                   Concerto Competition Winner

Tableaux de Provence is a series of musical pictures from the area known as Provence in the southeast corner of France bordering the Mediterranean. The work highlights the beauty and versatility of the alto saxophone with contrasting movements full of animation and charm.

Saturday Night Waltz, from "Rodeo" - Aaron Copland

Throughout the American Southwest, the Saturday afternoon rodeo is a tradition. The ranch hands get together to show off their skill in roping, riding and branding. The afternoon's exhibition is usually followed by a Saturday night dance at the ranch house

Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92 - Ludwig van Beethoven
II. Allegretto
IV. Allegro con brio

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 may be less well-known than the Fifth or the Ninth, but it is a masterpiece nonetheless. Beethoven is known for his obsessive treatment of rhythm, and this work in particular overflows with rhythmic drive.
There are four movements in the piece, the second of which, the Allegretto, is as famous as any music Beethoven wrote, and it was a success from the first performance.
The thrills are balanced with moments of pure sweetness, as Beethoven brings this magnificent masterpiece to a superb and lively close.

Holiday Pops Sing-Along - arr. Bob Cerulli

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer
I'll Be Home For Christmas

Bob Cerulli arranged these popular Christmas songs into a medley for full orchestra to create an audience sing-along for all to enjoy. Relax and fill your heart with joy as everyone sings popular holiday songs with full orchestra accompaniment ! (Your voice will never sound better.)
