All District 181 parents and community members are being invited to join together in the "One District, One Book" event for the 2012-13 school year. This collaborative initiative is part of the district’s celebration of the program SELAS (Social Emotional Learning for Academic Success).
SELAS Week takes place in District 181 in January of every year. As part of the weeklong focus on the program, District 181 will host a discussion about the “One District, One Book” title for this year - “The Whole-Brain Child" written by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. and Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D. Parents, staff and all community members are encouraged to read the book and join District staff in a dialogue about the content; the event will be held Tuesday, January 29 at Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The mission of the SELAS program is to provide the school community with the foundation for lifelong social and emotional learning in a safe and caring environment. Staff members work to help students become self-aware and able to manage their behaviors, have understanding and empathy for others and develop positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
More information about the book, the event and SELAS is available at www.d181.org > Resources > The Whole-Brain Child.
