The Hinsdale Center for the Arts addressed the closing in a brief press release sent to Patch over the weekend.
The Hinsdale Center for the Arts (HCA) has closed its doors in Katherine Legge Memorial Park due to "loss of vital funding" and "general economic turmoil," according to a press release Patch received Saturday. "I can confirm that as difficult as it was, we have ultimately been forced to make the decision to close the [HCA's] doors," board member Jan Tuthill said in an accompanying email to Patch. Hinsdale Center for the Arts abruptly closed up shop on July 20 due to financial issues and low enrollment, according to a Doings Hinsdale story published on July 25. The Doings quoted HCA board of trustees secretary Jan Tuthill as saying the board voted unanimously to close on July 18 after a five-hour meeting. Tuthill says in the story that the organization has been operating on a budget in the $700,000 range during fiscal year 2012, a decrease from fiscal year 2008, when the HCA brought in $1 million in revenue. Tuthill says in The Doings' story that the decision to close is final as of now. Participants signed up for current summer classes have been notified of the closing. In light of recent shootings in Colorado, law enforcement presence will be stepped up at local theaters where “The Dark Knight Rises” is being shown.
In the aftermath of today's deadly shooting inside an Aurora, Colorado movie theater that left as many as 12 dead and 50 wounded, police will be stepping up enforcement to help ensure the safety of local movie-goers attending screenings of "The Dark Knight Rises." The film was being shown at the movie theater in Colorado when the tragedy took place. “We will be directing our patrol resources toward all the local theaters,” said Deputy Chief Gina Grady of the Woodridge Police Department. “We have already had some inquiries from the public about this, and we are going to do what we can do to keep everyone safe.” Grady said local theaters will be one of the department’s primary patrol areas while “The Dark Knight Rises” is being shown. Area children were invited to share their love for animals by submitting artwork. The following is a release from the Hinsdale Center for the Arts: Perfect for elementary and middle school actors, singers and dancers in Grades 3 through 8, Hinsdale Center for the Arts' upcoming play, High School Musical Jr., based on Disney's smash hit High School Musical, brings together all the kids from the fictional East High in a three-week musical theatre production you won’t want to miss. Rehearsal and instruction takes place Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning July 16. The final performances take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3-4, in a beautiful open-air theater of Katherine Legge Memorial Park. All actors are welcome, auditions are not required. Reality TV junkies, rejoice: Hinsdale continues to make its mark on regionally based shows. Downers Grove Patch reported bits of downtown Downers Grove and the Bello Tea tea shop could be spotted in the premiere episode of Vh1's "Mob Wives Chicago" last week. In its second episode Christina Scoleri, whose father has alleged mob ties, visited suburban psychotherapist Ann Cerney. Scoleri discusses her concern that living with her ex-husband and keeping the divorce secret from her 9-year-old daughter may have a negative impact on the family. Actor Matt Walsh may live in Los Angeles now, but his roots in the area run deep. Local influences pop up in everything from the Hinsdale South grad’s now-defunct Spike TV series Players, loosely based on Westmont sports bar Papa Passero’s, to his Chicago sports-focused comedy web series, Bear Down Podcast. Walsh, who co-founded the Upright Citizens Brigade and now stars in the HBO series Veep, which aired its season finale Sunday, is back in his hometown this weekend for a slate of family graduations. The 39th Annual Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival took place in Burlington Park Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10. The event was put on by the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce and featured the work of artists from around the country and that of local folks from Hinsdale and other Western Suburbs. Sad news out of Boston today: Tom and Ray Magliozzi, better known as the Saturday morning radio mechanics on NPR's "Car Talk," are calling it quits, the Associated Press reports. They show will continue to air in reruns, but after 25 years of giving at once useful and hilarious advice on car maintenance to callers with every manner of malfunction, no new episodes will be produced. Older brother Tom is 74 years old, while Ray is 63. The show was first broadcast on WBUR in Boston in 1977. It's now the most popular program on NPR and is heard coast-to-coast.
