State Senator to Speak at Third Home Rule Meeting

The former mayor of Downers Grove served on that village's board of trustees when home rule was discussed and retained.

State Senator Ron Sandack (R-21st) will speak about home rule at the Village’s third home rule informational meeting set for 7 p.m., Feb. 15 at Prospect Elementary School. 

Sandack said he hopes to offer his perspective as a private citizen who has some experiences that may assist Clarendon Hills residents with their decision to support or oppose the home rule referendum question. Sandack served on the Board of Trustees for Downers Grove at a time when the community extensively discussed home rule and ultimately retained it in a community referendum. Clarendon Hills residents will have the opportunity vote whether the Village should become a home rule municipality during the March 20 primary election.

The meeting set for February 15 is the third the Village is hosting to help residents become informed about home rule. The meeting will discuss the Village’s current financial condition, future financial projections and how the Village is proposing to use home rule authority to ensure the Village’s long term financial security. 

Sandack was formerly Mayor of Downers Grove from 2007 to 2011 when he was appointed to complete the term of former State Senator Dan Cronin who resigned following his election to become Chairman of the DuPage County Board. Sandack became involved in municipal issues in 2001 when he was appointed to the Downers Grove Liquor Commission. He was elected to the Village Council in 2003 and became mayor in 2007. As a councilman, he served on the Village’s Finance and Administrative Committee, as well as Council liaison to the Parking and Traffic Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Liquor Commission.

Sandack current serves as the Minority Spokesperson for the Licensed Activities Committee and serves on the Financial Institutions, Judiciary, Labor, and Appropriations I committees. He also serves on the Subcommittee for Special Issues and the Subcommittee on Health Care Licensing.
