Illinois Republicans Energized but Questioning Foreign Policy After Convention

In the latest Land of Lincoln Red survey issued by Patch, Republican respondents shared their opinions on the presidential election following the Republican National Convention.

Citing speeches by Sen. Marco Rubio, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and celebrity Clint Eastwood, 94 percent of Republicans surveyed by Patch said their party's National Convention provided the party with the momentum it needs to get the base to turn out for what is expected to be a close election.

That's part of the results from a recent Land of Lincoln survey issued by Patch in the Chicago area. Ninety-three Republicans were surveyed, with 30 responding.

Most Republican respondents mentioned the Rubio and Ryan speeches as highlights of the convention, while one respondent said "Mitt Romney just did OK."

According to Republican respondents, 53 percent said they felt more confident about Romney's chances of winning after the convention, while 43 said their confidence had not changed. Although only a few Republicans mentioned Romney as a highlight of the convention, everyone said they felt he made a strong case for why he should be president (though a majority said they didn't feel strongly about that).

The convention featured "speakers that articulated what the party stands for in contrast with the Democrats," one Republican said. "Romney did a decent job defining himself but I knew he couldn't get too specific because Obama would just turn it around on him a week later."

A perceived lack of specific plans was something many respondents touched on, most notably involving the absence of foreign policy in Romney's speech.

"Even a line or two would have been OK, but it was a bad omission," one Republican said. "They didn't talk about how they would make our lives better," another said.

However, 80 percent of respondents said they either agreed or strongly agreed that Romney provided specifics on his goals and how he would achieve them. About 13 percent said they disagreed, and 7 percent said they had no opinion.

Republicans didn't have many good things to say about the Democratic National Convention, though many said President Bill Clinton "still has the magic." Respondents said his speech, along with others, did a good job to fire up voters on the left. But one Republican said the show put on by Clinton could remind voters that Obama isn't Clinton.

"Bill Clinton was electric," one Republican said. "So good that it may remind people how bad President Obama's four years have been. People liked Bill Clinton as president, but he is not seen as trustworthy by independents and he overshadowed Obama in a huge way."

Commenting on missteps at the Democratic National Convention, most Republicans mentioned Democrats' failure to include mentions to God or Jerusalem in the original platform, only to go back on that later in an awkward voice vote.

Check back tomorrow for Democrats' response to the Land of Lincoln survey.

Romney talks of ADDING 100,000 troops to the Army and Marines. Really? And just which third world ratholes does he intend to send these young men and women to so his overwweight middle-aged neo-con supporters can wrap themselves in the flag, play being roman pro-consul and make egregious profits for their corporations providing "support" for the military? Will his five sons enlist and help the cause? The fact that those questions have to be asked is reason enough to keep Obama in office. As a veteran I'm tired of chicken hawks wanting to send other's children to get their butts shot off.

Russ, thanks for that article.

The last sentence Obama is still going to use diplomacy in regards to dealing with Iran:

The president has made an assurance that he will prevent Iran from making a nuclear weapon, and his record bears out that he will do what he says,” said Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to the White House. For now, at least, “the best way to do that is through diplomacy.”

I would not be surprised if Mittens is already drawing up war plans for an invasion of Iran.

Romney/Ryan ticket is an excellent choice in this election. All one has to do is look at the numerous failed policies and staff of the current administration to know that 4 more years of what we currently have will drive this country further into the ground.

Yet the Republicans are losing ground daily since the convention. They're going to lose and lose badly. If they were to run exclusively on positive ideas (attacking the current administration as a sole method to win won't work, people need facts) and if they would explain a few of the fuzzy numbers in their budget plan (What tax loopholes would Romney close?) they may still lose, yet the country would gain respect for the GOP and the party may escape extinction. I hope that party does some deep introspection after November and learns from the errors that they've made over the last 12 years.

What about all the failed promises of the Republicans since the 2010 mid-term elections. They promised jobs and not passing a bill that would add to the deficit. Where are all the jobs they promised?

They also broke their other promise about not passing a bill that would add to the deficit a month after they were elected.

I guess they don't care about helping American since they were to busy trying to make sure Obama doesn't get re-elected. Nice way of putting the American people first.

Only if we get another for more years of a Republican congress that blocks, obsructs, roots for failure of the country, and refuses to do their jobs for another four years. I wonder how many of us could refuse to work because we did not like who the boss hired, esp. if we did not like him because of prejudice. That is what we have in congress. It is shameful, but I do not blame Obama for it. I blame the Republicans. And no, we certainly do not need four more years of Republican anything.

Hi Paul, voted Republican in past but not this time. The reason no one will answer you is Romney's going to do away with both of these deductions and it could be an across the board hit. Taxes will be increasing but only for the middle class and that will average $2500. Something no one talks about on here if you notice. My boss is up on all of this and he's one unhappy business owner who wouldn't vote for Romney if he was the last person on earth.

I can tell you from personal experience that he sends the jobs overseas. I worked for a company that he scarfed down and sent the company OS where they're making $2.00 a day. ( I lost my job 5 days after my wife was diagnosed with cancer) We were given 2 weeks notice and they made no bones about the money they were going to use for vacations and bonuses. Have you heard about Freeport Il?, they're the next chopping block and it will devastate the town.

Turbo Tax Tomney has never once said how he was creating jobs here. He said he's creating jobs but never once says they're for Americans or will stay in this country. I've asked this question several times and as usual no response.

Create jobs so wages will not continue to fall, down $5000 per family per year since 2008.
Lets see what the Dems have done for you.
*6 million Middle Class Americans will pay the ObamaCare Tax of $1200-$1500 a year beginning in 2013.
*obamaCare is imposing a 3.8% surtax on the Middle Class
*ObamaCare taxes on fast food chains, gas, medical supplies, hospitals will cause the Middle Class to pay more for everyday items and will explode health insurance and other premiums.
* increased costs to business will cause them to hire less, pay less

Nothing like taking parts of quotes and manipulating them:

"obamaCare is imposing a 3.8% surtax on the Middle Class"
The healthcare law’s tax provisions include a 3.8% extra income tax on dividends, interest and capital gains

You also forgot to mention that Obamacare will actually reduce the defict

I agree with you, Vera! At least you're willing to use your name instead of hiding behind your son's name! If any of you think you are Roman Catholic, please be reminded that according to section 2272 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "Formal Cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication 'latea sententiae' by the very commission of the offense, and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law."
The key words here are "Formal Cooperation!" You can't get much more formal than voting for or contributing to a party who has in it's platform a "Pro-Choice" plank! Keep in mind that Obama put through the law in this state that "the Mother's intent must be upheld." That means that if an abortionist makes a mistake and the baby survives the abortion attempt, the baby must be set aside and be given no medical aide to help it survive! As far as Obama was concerned, the baby MUST die! It's a shame that the democrat party is so attached to abortion and death.

But wait you said you loved dogs, I guess you were wrong.

Save a child and then have someone else raise and take care of it. You better hope it pays taxes and doesnt end up on welfare. We wouldnt want it to be part of the 47% that is dependant on the government.

You saint. Save a child from death but abandon it after it has its first breath. Knowing you, it would be allright if the infant is sent home in a crate on top of the car. Thats the Christian way.

The answer to the dilemma that Republicans face in trying to re-take the White House is pretty simple....nominate a moderate Republican. Unfortunately candidates like Mitt have to tack so far to the right in order to get the party's nomination they become virtually unelectable because they will no longer appeal to the undecideds who analysts say are primarily moderate in their ideology. Ironically the Massachusetts Mitt I believe would be doing a lot better in the polls than the 2012 reincarnation . It is like what Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said recently "there are not enough angry white males in the country to keep the Republican party afloat". I am sure people like G. Ryan can relate.

Here you go Vera volpe imanidiot! At least get the numbers right that you're lying about.

Lie 4: Repeating a Romney lie, Ryan accused President Obama of stealing $716 billion from Medicare in order "to pay for a new entitlement we didn't even ask for."

Fact: That $716 billion represents savings achieved by cutting inflated payments to insurance companies and hospitals under Medicare Advantage. They are credited by the CBO with extending the life of Medicare another eight years. And, under Obama's plan, those savings are used to provide preventive care such as check-ups and mammograms. Of course, Ryan did not mention that the identical $716 billion in cuts are contained in his own budget, approved twice by House Republicans. The only difference: Ryan would use those funds to help pay for bigger tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 a year.

This was copied from http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/sns-201208301500--tms--bpresstt--m-a20120830-20120830,0,2894312.column.

Vera, you're a very poor example of a Catholic and it saddens me that I share my Faith with you. If your so proud of yourself and your strong beliefs, please bring your posts to Mass on Sunday and share them with your Pastor. See what he thinks of your Christian ways.

Personally, I don't believe in abortion but it is the law of the land and I believe a lot of those laws contradict themselves. I'm sure being the ultra-conservative Republican you claim to be, you support the law of the land, you know, what part of "illegal" immigration don't you understand? You support only the laws you choose because you're a hypocrite blinded by hate. Such a Christian you are.

Should abortion be disallowed in all situations like rape and incest? Say for instance Vera was raped and impregnated by her father, should she be forced to carry that baby to term?

How does same-sex marriage hurt you? Not my cup of tea, but it has no impact on me. The HHS you refer to was clearly a mistake by the President and it was corrected. How is that harming us as Catholics?

Emily, I believe the laws on abortion contradict each other at times. I'm not sure about the Bible, because I have never really read it because that's not typically how the Catholic Church has taught. They teach it the way the Church interpets it.

And honestly, I think the Church is out of step on many issues in the modern world, contraception for example. I'm certaninly not a perfect Catholic or Christian by any stretch, not sure any of us are. But I try to live by some simple rules, mostly treat others with respect, do what I can, when I can to help others. Basically, do the right thing even though I certainly fail at times but I'm hoping that I have done more good than bad.

Stones...With regards to bringing posts to Mass to share with your pastor...many priests, nuns, bishops and cardinals may actually be excommunicated if their views are in line with the democrat party. I reiterate: Please be reminded that according to section 2272 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "Formal Cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication 'latea sententiae' by the very commission of the offense, and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law."
The key words here are "Formal Cooperation!" You can't get much more formal than supporting, voting for or contributing to a party who has in it's platform a "Pro-Choice" plank!

I questioned a priest about this at the Joliet Diocesan Offices and found that even he believed that there were many good catholics in the democrat party...he mentioned Nancy Pelosi by name as one! However...if you recall, the Holy Father would NOT meet with Nancy Pelosi in Public and would only receive her in a private anti-chamber!!! No Photo Ops for Nancy!!! I can only imagine what the Holy Father said to her! If her meeting with the Pope was so supportive of her role in the democrat party, we wouldn't stop hearing about it! All Catholics must carefully choose their spiritual guides! The Pope, the Catechism and the Magisterium!

Wrong longsdad! Cafeteria Catholics is one that excepts abortion, same sex marriage and other convoluted ideas against the Church and they say it is what it is , and it doesn't have to be that way if the lazy ones get of their rears and voice their opinions and attend rally's in large masses! Instead of saying we have to live with it! That's stupid thinking!

I called you a Cafeteria Christian. Christians think murder is murder whether it be a baby, fetus or a person on death row.

You think killing a baby/fetus is wrong but have no problem killing a person on death rown.

That makes you a Cafeteria Christian. That is a fact. You can't pick and choose which parts of being a Christian you want to believe in.

Wrong again on cafeteria Catholic. A murderer is vile and evil as well as a threat to our society , where as an unborn child is innocent and pure. I go with the old testament! An eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth!

Stones! Please quit your Church then. You should be attending rallys against abortion ,same sex marriage and the HHS mandate ,which has not been corrected! Why do you think that all the Catholic Archdiocese are filing law suits? Bet you are clueless! My Priest will tell me to continue with my stance against abortion , same sex marriage and the HHS mandate and continue our crusade against religious freedom! Are you going to the rally at the Federal building on October 20th for the rally? Then your Church is whacked if it believes in same sex marriage or tolerates abortion! As for abortion no to all situations! Is it the babies fault! Hell no! As for all illegal immigrants , they should all be sent back packing and allowed back after they applied for citizenship and background checks!

No it's not the babies fault. Personally I am opposed to abortion, especially as a matter of conveniece. I'd rather see people be responsible.

Your priest may tell you to continue your stance but noth your methods. By the way, capital punishment is in direct conflict with the teaching of the Catholic Church, yet you pick and choose what you'll support. Just like the rest of the laws.

If there was a rally against preist sex abuse, would you attend that?

Send all the immigrants back? That's like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube, not possible. Besides, do you have any idea what that would do to our economy/ Never mind, different topic.

Vera...I understand your frustration with some of these "mutton heads," but pray for those who do and think "evil things (including Obama)." Losing your patience with them only "eggs them on." Trust that the Good Lord will dole out justice, one day. Pray that those who are on the wrong side of what is right and good may find repentance one day and not meet the Lord with a blackened soul!

Yep and I'm personally in favor of capital punishment. Another example of why I think the Church is out of touch on some issues. In fact, I would like to see it expanded to child rapists and abusers becuase they are more vile than even murderers, which can be a crime of passion. Maybe not right but understandable.

Abortion is a matter of innocent life versus capital punishment which is punishment for a heinous crime. There is a big difference. I struggle daily with my Faith and Church, but like everything else I take the good with the bad and it has had important role in my life.

Vera, leaving aside any talk of abortion/birth control/death-penalty, I'm pretty sure any main-line Catholic priest could not support your views on immigration based upon existing church theology. There is a very beautiful church in Chicago run by Opus Dei that you might want to check out-- they even flaunt the canon rules by taking confessions during mass, lest you die between your pre-mass confession and before receiving the sacrament!

Since you are on the topic of abortion, riddle me this Batman.

Why are pro-life people referred to as ANTI-abortionists, while pro-choice people don't like to be called PRO-abortionists? Isn't abortion one of the choices they so passionately defend?

And since we are asking perplexing questions.....why are pro-life groups always (well a majority of the time) run by men? Men who will never be faced with the choice of having or aborting a child.

"Why are pro-life people referred to as ANTI-abortionists"

This is how I look at the those two terms.

Pro life means you are in favor of all life - the unborn and those on death row
Anti-abortion means you are just in favor of saving the unborn and can care less about those on death row

People in favor of (most often Liberals) refer to those mean Anti-abortion people.

While the MSM always refers to the other side of the argument as Pro-choice (sounds a lot friendlier than pro-abortion).

I'm just saying call a spade a spade.

By the way, there is NO DEATH ROW in the state of Illinios. Until we get a governor who is willing to sign an executive order restarting executions. It is actually cheaper to pay for them to be in prison their whole life (the murders not the governors), then to pay for all the appeals that automatically kick in when someone is sentenced to death.

To those of you who are Roman Catholic...it is the Church's position that even Capital Punishment should be done away with. Those of you that have no faith whatsoever...consider this. There is only one known place in the entire universe that life exists! Upon this world we have two distinctions of life. Sentient and non-sentient. Either way...even if there were no God, life would become the rarest commodity in the universe and therefore become the most valuable thing in the universe. To treat any life in a cavalier manner would be to degrade any race of sentient beings and prove them to be foolish to a fault and unworthy of sentience!

It might be worth all of you watching "180 - the movie" on you tube! It's only 33 minutes long and if you can get past some of the "preachiness," they make some very good and logical points regarding abortion and how people should think about it!

180 hits the nail on the head!
The documentary concludes with Comfort stating that over 50 million abortions have occurred to date; he calls this the "American Holocaust".

My opinion they all are sick bastards that let abortion to continue and to have already killed 50 million innocent victims.
