Jeff Ward: Disdain for Women Is GOP's Death Knell
This new tactic marks the official end of the ultra-conservative movement.
If I had a daughter and she gave me just two choices, I’d advise her to take up stripping before seeing her become a member of the Republican Party.
I cannot understand why any self-respecting woman would willingly join the GOP—or the Catholic Church, for that matter. Though I will defend anyone’s God-given right to make bad decisions to my death, the GOP's unofficial war on women baffles me.
When I previously wrote about beauty contests, cheerleaders and Halloween costumes, I was trying to tackle the more-subtle ways our culture demeans women by reducing them to the sum of their body parts.
But yikes! Having lived through the Women’s Lib and ERA era, I never thought I’d see the day when conservatives would wage an outright war on women. And it all started with the presidential contender whose highest aspiration is to impose Catholic Sharia Law.
So much for that GOP mantra of less government!
“It’s (contraception) not OK because it’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be,” Rick Santorum is quoted on the ABC News website and about a billion other sources. “They’re supposed to be within marriage, they are supposed to be for purposes that are, yes, conjugal, but also procreative.”
Ah yes! The Barefoot and Pregnant Baby Factory argument. I don’t know what’s more shocking, the bizarre things that come out of Santorum’s mouth or that a woman was actually willing to marry him.
And don’t try to defend him by claiming he’s clinging to his Catholic faith, because religious opposition to contraception isn’t rooted in any moral truth so much as it’s rooted in a centuries-old disdain for women that starts with the Christian creation story.
Some silly woman had the temerity to eat from the tree of knowledge, and that sent the whole thing to hell in a hand basket. How do you come back from that one?
The Catholic Church’s opposition to contraception is nothing more than a bunch of single old men intent on telling women what’s best for them. Should there be consequences for having sex? You bet—for women!
This whole birth control comedy came to a head when our Anti-Christ President issued a mandate forcing religious institutions to cover contraceptives in their employee health plans, despite the Religious Right's obvious objection.
While I can understand the conservative desire to defend the unborn fetus, protecting the unconceived child? Republicans are willing to take care of you until you’re born—then you’re on your own!
Which brings us to the story of 30-year-old Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, who tried to testify before a Republican congressional hearing on the birth control mandate, but was barred from doing so.
In fact, no woman was granted the privilege of speaking at that hearing. Who needs to hear from some silly female student attending the nation’s 14th-ranked law school, anyway?
After she was invited to address Democratic House members, Fluke underscored the need for equal treatment of women’s health issues, especially for low-income women, and argued in favor of the President’s contraceptive policy.
Enter the misogynistic master of mayhem who makes Rick Santorum look like Mr. Rogers. Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh opened his tirade by chiding Fluke for wanting to have sex at the taxpayers’ expense.
The first problem with Rushbo’s argument is that Georgetown is a private university, which means we’d never be on the hook for any student’s extracurricular activities.
Second, if you doubt that the oldest of all double standards still exists, we do pay for old men to have sex, at least on a technicality, because Medicare covers Viagra if it's prescribed for non-ED purposes. Just be sure to call your doctor for an erection lasting more than four hours.
I’m sure Rush remembers Viagra. It’s the drug they found in his luggage prescribed under someone else’s name.
Please don’t even try to tell me that all that Viagra doled out under Medicare Part D in 2007 and 2008 was some sort of health panacea while preventing pregnancy isn’t a health issue. God forbid a woman should have control over her own body. Which would you rather pay for, the pill or the child?
Continuing with his “impeccable” logic, Rush went on to conclude that anyone who wants to be paid to have sex must be a “slut” and a “prostitute,” and they should recompense the taxpayers by posting online videos of their sexual encounters. Say, what?
I don’t know what scares me more. The fact that this blowhard has a forum or that four separate women agreed to marry him.
Though it was fun to watch Rush fold like a cheap suit when faced with the ensuing advertiser and affiliate fallout, I think we have got to give him credit for so clearly stating what some Republicans were already thinking but too smart to say out loud.
No married woman should use contraceptives because their only purpose in life is to produce children, and any single woman who uses birth control has to be a “slut.” Even after his on-air non-apology, Rush rambled on ad nauseam about Fluke wanting to have sex “all the time.”
And this, folks, officially marks the end of the Karl Rove inspired conservative movement. It’s all over but the shouting. They lost the presidency to a black man. They lost the battle against gay marriage. The occupy movement scares the heck out them and their obstructionist legislative strategy has failed.
With nowhere left to turn, conservatives went after women and, as we all know, any political group that takes up that pastime is doomed to extinction.
Oh! They’ll hang on kicking and screaming for some time, but with these concerted and bizarre attacks on contraception, all the Right Wingers did was prove what we’ve known all along—it’s all about wealthy old white men.
Thanks, Rush! I couldn’t have written a better script myself.

I hadn't really thought about contraception and women's issues for a long time, before this whole anti contraception debate heated up, thanks to the GOP. But now that it is here, I agree that women, are getting slighted in regards to healthcare in many areas. Do you know that when a woman leaves work to have a baby, she goes on Disability? Women are not disabled because they are pregnant. They should be celebrated instead of told there is something wrong with them. They should get special care at hospitals, or better yet, have whole new birthing centers open to them, where they don't have to be exposed to "sick" people. Women, if you are bright and have a yearning for democracy and women's rights, I urge you to run for office and fight for our rights!! There are way too many men in government and all they create is gridlock. I think many would agree that women know how to get things done. Look at Hillary!! She doesn't walk around threatening other countries like an out of control gunslinger, she works with them and shows them strong leadership. And gets things done. Obstructionism doesn't work and you will see that, at the polls in November.

Which teachings of the Catholic Church are we ignorant of? Perhaps that faith must be accompanied by acts? And just which acts by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church have come to our attention over the last twenty years or so? Could it be the massive and well orchestrated coverup of thousands of felony rapes of children worldwide? And we look to this institution for moral guidance? I am a Christian, I belong to and attend a church, and I am deeply appalled and ashamed of the acts of those who claim the "right" to dictate the "teachings of the church".

"C" word to describe conservative women in the media for several years now and our herioic president has not said a word. The guy is a National Socialist, as evidenced by his pasty history, associations and present day govenmental dictates. Women everywhere have huge access to contraceptions including free contraceptions at places like Planned Parenthood, etc. Poor Sandra, spends $1000.00 a year on contraceptions while attending one of the most expensive law schools in the country. Lets see, condoms are about $1.00 each, probably the most expensive option, and the last time I looked there were 365 days in a year. HOLY COW, when does she have time to study. She must be a very, VERY popular young lady. Contraceptions are available to women everywhere either free or at every little expense. This sharade is not about access to contraceptions, it is about the governmental takeover of health care and govenmental dictates to religious organizations and their health care insurance options. In the future we will see more governmental dictates by a president that has been schooled in socialism. Simply stated, National Socialism is his goal. Hide and watch!

You did mention you are Jesuit educated with a minor in theology, did you not?
Even the Jesuits', who are masters of syllogistic semantics and fallacy, would ask you to please stop talking. You are embarrassing them.
Viagra intends to correct a physiological abnormality; that the user may then correctly or incorrectly engage in a sexual act afterward is a distinct and separate matter.
Contraception, aside is always used to avoid the intended consequences of natural law coming from a sexual act.
Those who state oral contraceptives are using semantics in attempt to change the matter in contention. Hormone based medication used to correct a physiological abnormality does not go against Catholic Church teaching.
The fact the same product is named after or marketed as a contraceptive is irrelevant. This same type of abuse of syllogistic argument is used by the anti-gun crowd. No one against the measure in question is saying that all hormonal based pills be outlawed; just as it would be likewise idiotic to call for a ban of all bullets in attempt to control abuse of guns.
All that said, please continue to write pieces like this one and stay active in the comments. All concerned will be better educated on the ignorance regarding many matters if you do.
Cheers.

JD - sounds like you believe viagra is ok, because it cures a physical abnormality. So if your spouse is too old to procreate, what are you suppose to do with the erection viagra gives you. Options are to stare at it and just be happy you got it up, or do you find a young lady who is capable of procreation and go for it. Outside of staring, if you do anything else your sinning.

I'm with you, Jeff. How any woman could interpret access to contraceptives (which can be used for a myriad of health issues) as a license to "sleep around" is beyond me. Similarly, Mr. Santorum's advice to a woman or girl who finds herself pregnant after rape or incest to "make the best of it" boggles the mind. I, too, lived through the fight for a woman's right to be her own person, and have domain over her own body. Sometimes I wonder if young women don't appreciate the importance of this attack on women because they never experienced a world where the first question asked of a female college graduate in a job interview was, "How many words a minute can you type?"

re "How any woman could interpret access to contraceptives (which can be used for a myriad of health issues) as a license to "sleep around" is beyond me."
That any woman can so understand the issue as you defined it is, not beyond me. Sadly we live in a world where people like yourself, through either intent or ignorance, distort the question under consideration.
No one has said women should be denied access to hormone based medical treatments. So you are either a liar or extremely ignorant; pick one because that is what the facts demand.
re Santorum's advise: thank you for making known to everyone, especially young women, your position on the value and rights of a human life vs. your desires for a life-style.
And the only women asked in a job interview "how many words a minute can you type", were women applying for a job where that skill was essential to the job. If anyone is too dumb to not know the skills required of a job when they apply, they shouldn't be offended when asked a question critical to the job. But then again, based on the assertion, I doubt you were speaking of reality when you came up with that classic.

Great article Jeff. Still trying to figure out why this topic offends people so much. Birth control is a benefit to all. It prevents unwanted children. There are enough kids in this world that go through life being beat up, verbally abused, etc from their parents who never truly wanted them in the first place. And let's forego contraception so we can have the population grow so fast, what limited natural resources we have left to run this planet will become even more scarce. People are going to have sex, with or without birth control. It is human nature. Most people want to have that sex with someone they love and care about. Therefore most of that sex will be with the same person for most of their lives. Just because they don't want a child every time they want to show each other they love and care about them doesn't mean its wrong. Get over it everyone. Life's to short.

Ahhh, the peak oil and man made global warming crown jewels enter the fray.
There's an mind boggling, amazing thing that happens on planet earth every day; water falls on dirt, sun falls on dirt, life springs forth from a seed in the dirt.
The fact is Bob, science does not know where carbon based fuels come from. There are some very good theories, but no proven laws. It has not been proven or dis-proven that oil is naturally made by the earth itself.
Foregoing the population question for now, it is also the height of arrogance to assert the earth is going to run out of carbon based energy any time soon. Those who hang on such beliefs use all sorts of statistical inferences to argue such.
Yet if they applied the same statistical discipline to the question of limited natural resources, it would show there is far greater likelihood there are vast unknown reserves. For example, under the ice caps and deep oceans. But folks like you seem to want to destroy the very industries and incentives that advance technologies needed to find the resources that your statistical god's say exist....
Thank you for reminding us all, again, the intellectual foundations and limitations to those who dont understand the opposition to the matter under discussion.

This country has historically been center right, but we have lost our way. To quote Nixon via The New Yorker: "In 1959, Vice-President Nixon, speaking to members of California’s Commonwealth Club, was asked if he’d like to see the parties undergo an ideological realignment [...]and he replied, “I think it would be a great tragedy if we had our two major political parties divide on what we would call a conservative-liberal line. I think one of the attributes of our political system has been that we have avoided generally violent swings in Administrations from one extreme to the other. And the reason we have avoided that is that in both parties there has been room for a broad spectrum of opinion.” Ten months before the general election, the increasingly angry, suspicious, and divided party of Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, and Perry seems ever more immersed in its current orthodoxies." http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2012/01/23/120123taco_talk_frank#ixzz1od1IRG8v Those, in my view, extreme orthodoxies are out of step with the mainstream, and will probably be their downfall.

The regressives want to take America back to the " good old days " of white male entitlement where there the help wanted ads read " white man only " and single unmarried women were viewed as man-hating spinsters and lesbians.
My daughters are frequently reminded that back in those " good old days " they could not get a mortgage for a house or credit in their own names, had no voice in politics and no personal identity outside of her husband and family, and if she required surgery of a female nature, she needed her husbands permission because he had first rights to her bodily functions as owner.
What we have here is a large scale attempt to establish a male dominated thocracy called the American Taliban, with the key players being Limbaugh & Santorum and others, and they will use lies and distortions to keep women in their proper place.

There are two elements that must be present with every sexual act. The act must be both 'procreative' (meaning 'open to life') and unitive (meaning 'the actual physical union of man and wife'). Any interruption of these two basic guidelines deliberately takes the Will of God out of it. It steps outside the rules of the Church which are inspired by God Himself.
Every act of sexual intercourse must be open to the transmission of human life. That is why barrier protection (condoms and spermicides), withdrawal before the completion of the act, and all forms of hormonal contraception and abortifacient drugs are forbidden. It also explains why the use of surrogate mothers, sperm banks, egg donation, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and certain fertility practices are forbidden by the Catholic Church as well.
If you apply the two basic elements, "procreative and unitive," to each one of these controversial practices today you will see that none of them exhibit both the Church-required "procreative and unitive" elements.
Additionally, direct sterilization (tubal ligation, vasectomy, and other new procedures that render one of the married partners sterile and unable to have any more children) is also not allowed. The lack of understanding of this teaching has led to the following shocking statistic.
So, 80-90 percent of Catholic women should be excommunicated ? All men who masturbate and are Catholic, as well.
Colin C.
9:15 am on Friday, March 9, 2012
To quote you, "There are two elements that must be present with every sexual act." You left out a key phrase here: "In the opinion of the leadership of this particular church".
"This particular church" has every right to state it belief, to try to persuade me that they are correct, and to champion their teachings.
What they do not have is the right to enshrine their teachings in the law.
Read the 1st. Amendment to the Constitution of the US. Basically, when a "moral principal" is not clearly agreed upon by the majority it should not become law.
This does not always work; there are ways that minority pressure groups can manipulate our democratic system, but the principal is clear: no establishment of a particular religion, or their particular beliefs, in law.
In other words, your church has no right to force its beliefs on me or anyone else.
Only the will of the democratic majority of this nation has that right and even there they must tread carefully. That's why the founders created checks and balances and made it so difficult to pass legislation.

Detroit Columnist Calls for Sterilants in Drinking Water to Curb Poverty Numbers
Proposal that aims to stop welfare dependents from “breeding poverty” would poison everyone with birth control spiked in public water.
Current White House science advisor John P. Holdren co-wrote the 1977 textbook Ecoscience, which lays out in detail a wide-array of coercive and voluntary-submission population control methods. One of the most drastic is that of “Adding a sterilant to drinking water or staple foods”
. Fabian Socialist planner George Bernard Shaw embodies this plan, and takes it to the logical endpoint:
“Under socialism you would not be allowed to be poor. You would be forcibly fed, clothed, lodged, taught, and employed whether you like it or not. If it were discovered that you had not character enough to be worth all this trouble, you might possibly be executed in a kindly manner; but whilst you were permitted to live you would have to live well.”
Putting sterilants in the water, though, dates back further to a 1969 memo sent in private from Planned Parenthood VP Frederick S. Jaffe

It seems to me that a few hundred Cardinals and Bishops are desperately trying to hold power over not only women but the Catholic community as a whole. While I believe in religious freedom for all, and if a person wants to hold their beliefs in the strictest manner, well, that's fine. So as I quoted above, all married and un-married women, and all married or un-married men who do do follow the Humanee Vitae to the letter, should be excommunicated ? The encyclical that has been mention was not widely accepted by many of the faith, just some of the "true believers" of an aging, dying, faith, as evidenced by the loss of parishioners

If Mr. Santorum, Rush and the rest of the ultra-conservatives are so intent on "preserving the sanctity of marriage" that they want to make gay marriage and contraceptives illegal and change the constitution, I only have this to say.
If you really, and I mean really, want to "preserve the sanctity of mariage" I would highly suggest that you start by making adultery illegal. Whoa! What a concept. Making something that actually contributes to the 50% percent divorce rate illegal? And if I remember the hours of religion drilled into my head in Catholic school, isn't this one of the Ten Commandments?
So why not make something that is one of the Commandments a law instead of something that is only mentioned in a couple of obscure passages in the Bible?
Well I guess if it was illegal, there would be almost no politicans around because they would be in jail. Right Mr. Gingrich?

Jeff,
It's not just the Catholic Church. It's fundamentalists in general, both Christian and Islamic. Religion never used to be a big part of politics. But when Republicans started pandering to far right influences in the Christian community, they helped make religion a political issue and brought Middle Ages thinking back into the mainstream again. People are no longer embarrassed to come out and say that the earth is 4,000 years old, or that evolution didn't happen, or that women should be subject to their husbands, or that the women's movement is "a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians". That last quote is courtesy of Pat Robertson, spiritual mentor to a lot of Christian fundamentalists. We used to think these people were crazy and ignored them. Now they're embraced by politicians seeking votes.

In that I agree. I personally don't think the administration has the right to make religious affiliated organizations pay for something that's against their belief system. The Constitution defend that separation. It *also defends the right that your (generic) beliefs don't dictate the greater population. So. Secularly, birth control is what the citizens want . Religiously? If that's your belief, you are welcome to it. Unfortunately, the Constitution says that the twain shall never meet. Also that I can't be forced to garrison troops in my house. For which I am grateful. ;)
Jamie Martin

@Angela and Noel - Agreed. The left has taken this Constitutional issue and made it into a women's rights issue, which it is not. By law, religous instituions should not be forced to do something outside of their beliefs just because Obama thought it was a good idea. We all know this. Let's focus on that REAL issue.
I love how all the media says these poor women will not have "access" to contraceptives! Just because your insurance company doesn't pay for birth control doesn't mean you can't get it. Just go buy it! Until a few years ago, NO insurance companies in IL paid for the pill. Now having it paid for by insurance is a RIGHT?
The people who work for religious organizations who don't pay for contraceptives can still purchase them with their own money. They have a job and can choose to make that budget item a priority. Or they can find another job somewhere else, but given our unemployment numbers, option 1 is easier. (BTW-It doesn't cost $1,000 to take the pill for 12 months.)
Calling all this a "women's rights" issue is just a way to distract the American people from the real issues at hand: the current energy policy, outrageous decifits, socialism on our own soil, unemployment, insurance/tort reform.
Let's talk about something that really matters!

Formulaic vitriol on either side of the issue, or political persuasion, has been played out as shrill and shock only sell to the loyalists. “Ultra” anything, including Michelob Ultra, is passé. The real market opportunity for hearts, minds and dollars are the 80% of us who are somewhere along that bell shaped curve and not at either extreme. Most readers and watchers are looking for authentic and reasoned forums in which to absorb information and express opinions and ideas. You can find examples of this shift in the way advertisers are retooling their pitch to a more subtle, real and measurable story. Patch is also part of this trend. It enables thoughtful community contributions, and there are many excellent pieces by local residents covering a range of topics in this town. So I wonder, will this trend also lead to the disruption of Jeff’s artfully crafted, professional opinions by the contributed content of Patch’s talented, but amateur wordsmiths?

To compare Catholic teaching to Sharia Law is just as offensive as the name Rush called Sandra. Do you have class enough to apologize, Jeff? The government is the one trying to impose its views on others, by forcing millions of dollars in fines to bankrupt schools and hospitals run by people of faith who oppose contraception, abortificients, and sterilization. Rick Santorum has made it clear he will endeavor to outlaw contraception based on Catholic moral teachings. To impose that rule on non-Catholics is the equivalent of Muslim Sharia Law.

It seems to bother Mike that someone is pointing out the absurdity of religion in general.
Millions of people have left the catholic church over the years, myself one of them, and have realized that the world is a much better place when it is not ruled by fear and superstition.
Religions time is over. It served its purpose, but that purpose is now a liability. Much like slavery didn't die out in the minds of those who believed it when it was outlawed, it did eventually die out when those with slavery in their mind died out. Religion will go the same way, it is just a matter of time. The younger generation 'replacing' you does not hold to these superstitions like their parents and grandparents did.

@ Jefff
re Santorum/Sharia Law: the problem with Santorum is he is a liberal, progressive social justice Catholic politician who has jumped on two conservative moral subjects to gain attention.
Catholic teaching clearly prohibits a Catholic in good standing to use contraceptives.
However, Catholic teaching also does not allow for the denial of freedoms on matters that are not grave or intrinsically evil. Contraception via abortion, according to Catholic teaching, can be outlawed. Contraception via "the pill, according to Catholic teaching, can NOT be outlawed.
But that's the problem with liberals like you. You turn an opposition's position into something it is not, i.e. change the "narrative", and then scream out like a little girl against a monster that does not exist. That's why all the stories you tell sound like a hyperventilating little girl.
If the Catholic Church taught, like Islamic Law does, then you would have a point. Without it, you sound like a little child.
Also, there is no such thing as "Muslim" law. A Muslim is a person, a follower of Islam, there is however Islamic Sharia Law.
Honestly, please stop spreading lies and ignorance via immature stories like an hysterical little girl. Grow up and man up.

The Republican Party could have simply couched the debate on birth control as one of government interference.
I know of an employer who, about 15 years ago, decided to cover gastric by-pass. With a workforce in the thousands, it had a number of employees who were severely overweight, and probably had not been successful with other weight-loss treatments.
The insurance carrier determined how many procedures would be claimed, based on an analysis of claims for other weight-loss treatment plans.
In fact, the claims were about 4 times what was expected. After several years, the company dropped gastric by-pass from the list of covered procedures. It was costing too much.
So, should Washington be dictating every last procedure, prescription, and test that an employer must cover? Clearly no. Even Ayn Rand, who had little use for religion, would probably agree with the concept, but not with arguments used to support the concept.

The thing that scares me is we think women are entitled to birth control pills as part of "healthcare". Like men have no consequences now a days if a women gets pregnant. That aside, birth control pills don't fully protect a woman any way and in my opinion lull someone into a false sense of securtiy. You can still get STD's on the pill, and taking hormones for an extended period of time could be leading to the epidemic of breast and ovarian cancers. But lets just cover birth control pills so everyone can do whatever they want and not worry about the consequences. The bottom line is the church, whether you like it or not, whether you agree with it or not, has the right to refuse to provide something they so basically feel a moral objection to. The right for a woman to stop her pregnancy, no matter how responsible that seems, doesn't trump the first ammendment. If Ms. Fluke doesn't like it, she can go to a different school. Period. I understand the "Procreative" idea, I don't agree with it, but I would NEVER tell the church they couldn't believe it or teach it regardless of what I think. Also, hold members of your own party such as Bill Maher, to the same standard. Where is your outrage at him?

What if I start a religion and have 50 million followers, and we believe ear infections should be treated with vinegar and antibiotics are the devil's poison? By Republican definition, our insurance plans shouldn't have to cover antibiotics. I am not insulting Catholic beliefs, I am just saying, their beliefs shouldn't override the rights of non-Catholics.

Noreen,
Women, many of whom are not even sexually active, take the pill for a variety of MEDICAL reasons. To me this would be considered "healthcare" and should be covered as such. I would never expect a religious organization to cover the cost of condoms or other such item which is specifically used for sex, however the birth control pill is no longer one of those things. By not providing all women affordable access to the pill we are denying some women a chance at a healthy, pain free life.

Any "pill" used TO PROHIBIT the natural, normal physiological process of the sexual act is, by Church teaching, wrong.
Viagra, does NOT PROHIBIT natural sexual acts, it is a medication that ALLOWS for a man to overcome a physiological abnormality that kept him from participating in the sexual act in which natural law intended for him to participate.

Well Jeff, since there's so much in your piece that is simply completely not true, I decided to chose the one that I think is most important.
"And don’t try to defend him by claiming he’s clinging to his Catholic faith, because religious opposition to contraception isn’t rooted in any moral truth so much as it’s rooted in a centuries-old disdain for women that starts with the Christian creation story. Some silly woman had the temerity to eat from the tree of knowledge, and that sent the whole thing to hell in a hand basket. How do you come back from that one?"
First of all, Adam and Eve is a Jewish Story. Yes a part of Christianity's tradition, and the bible, but not really not a Christian story. Much like, slavery is part of the Democratic Party's history…. as were internment camps during WWII.
Second, the Faith of the Catholic Church has never held disdain toward women. Many men, women, priests, even nuns, etc., who called themselves Catholic have felt as you claim. But the Catholic Church has never taught or held what you claim.
Third, of the religions that identify themselves as Christian, it is the Catholic Church that first taught of the sanctity of Mary. Furthermore, the Catholic Church's Faith teaches that Mary is the first and highest of all the Saints.
Seriously, the only thing I see in your piece and the comments going to hell in a hand basket is your heart. Your mind is clearly already there.

re organized religion: well, again we see not only are things not your way filled with hate, but they also use fear and guilt to control women. Right, every day I see women chained to the Catholic Faith and forced to obey.
re dogma of Mary: uh, actually it's the Dogma of the Catholic Church Tawanda. And the Catholic Church was not founded until after 300 AD, but go ahead and keep believing and spouting it.
re "That is why we have a separation of church and state in the constitution (sic)": uh, it's not in the Constitution, Tawanda. It was a phrase taken from a letter by Jefferson to Baptist's in CT. And was read into Constitutional Law by judges. Interesting how the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and all the framers of the Constitution, specifically talked about the separation of church and state, yet chose not to put that phrase into the Constitution..... The put "respect no establishment of religion". Totally different philosophical concept, hence the different expression in English language.
re judge not: uh, no. Christ was not speaking of judgement but CONDEMNATION; totally different thing. But hey, lots of people have bought into the "judge" idea. Allows them to claim all sorts of people are evil and throw stones at people saying things they dont want to hear.
By the way, what color is your cape?

So I pointed to the absurdity of that claim with the slavery/internment camp and Democratic connection; both are extremely ugly stains of Democratic Party's history.
re "third point": Jeff's claims regarding women and the Catholic Church are factually false. Of all the Christian Faiths, the Catholic Church is the only one to hold a woman above all men. Mary is the greatest human in the history of mankind; that is a dogma of the Catholic Faith. Jeff is extremely ignorant of what the Catholic Faith teaches regarding men and women.

Of all the Christian Faiths, the Catholic Church is the only one to hold a woman above all men. Mary is the greatest human in the history of mankind; that is a dogma of the Catholic Faith. Jeff is extremely ignorant of what the Catholic Faith teaches regarding men and women. <end snip>
~~~
again, this is your belief and dogma to which you are entitled to. As for my belief, Genisis 1:1 says " in the beginning God made the heaven and earth " Noticably missing are the words " in the beginning Mary made the heavens and earth "
We are entitled to our beliefs but not entitled to turn them into a theocracy.
Okay. But seriously are you medicated? Your point has nothing to do with what I said.
By the way, Christ was man and God. Maybe that's the distinction in my "human" that you missed.
f I had a daughter and she gave me just two choices, I’d advise her to take up stripping before seeing her become a member of the Republican Party.
I cannot understand why any self-respecting woman would willingly join the GOP—or the Catholic Church, for that matter. Though I will defend anyone’s God-given right to make bad decisions to my death, the GOP's unofficial war on women baffles me.
It seems to me that that the La Grange Patch is rapidly becoming a forum for politics and Catholic bashing. Will this be the new modus operandi to encourage responses from readers? If so, you are losing many readers who have enjoyed local
I agree with you that the GOP has gone way out of control. Obama, has shown himself to be a very moderate President, and the GOP has gone so far right, and the right fringe has taken over party. Every time the Pres. tried to compromise with the GOP, they moved further right. Almost as if they just want to see how far into crazy land they can go. And when they reach unbelievable, they will pin it on Obama. The people blogging on the Patch are from all over the suburbs and people don't all hate the Catholic Church. The GOP brought the Catholic Church into this discussion on healthcare because they have nothing else to pin on Obama. Watch. They are DYING for Obama to do Anything that even looks controversial, because Obama is such a good man, that he rarely does anything wrong. The Catholic Church was pulled into this and honestly, it was way overblown and a non-issue. DePaul University is the largest Catholic College in the US and regularly allows employees to choose the type of medicine that they require. They have no problem helping their employees with their health.
Last post, I promise because it is really tiresome. I don't hat Catholics I hate the corrupt organization that calls itself The Catholic Church. The corruption starting at the Vatican and filtering down through the Cardinals and Bishops is a bane on society.
To make people vow fealty to a book of fiction and make them believe that all they need is faith and everything will be fine, is by any standard, delusional. And to believe that the prelates are messengers of GOD, well, again, delusional. If you are happy believing what you do, good for you, but the more I listen to "people of faith" it almost makes me believe that Scientology or LDS is just fiction as well only to so high up on the best seller list.
How very thoughtful you are, and hopefully it will pass IRS scrutiny <G>.I have know from a very early age the scam that the church has perpetrated on on it's flock, whereas you can commit venal and moral sins and have your soul cleansed by confession and absolution, therefore allowing your entry into heaven. At least the Jews have a better way to salvation, just give a large donation, money or property to their synagogue or rabbi. Or maybe be like evangelicals, and get dipped in the water and you are washed clean.
"I am woman, hear me roar!"...
If I walk into the middle of the public square, and proceeded to support, defend and demand the behaviors and foundational ideas that define Nazism be recognized and respected, would it be wrong to call me a Nazi?
Sandra freely walked into the middle of the public square and made even greater demands for her sexual promiscuity and loose sexual morals. She demanded I pay for them.
Yet Rush calling Sandra a "slut", the very word defined by the terms Sandra used to explain why she has right to another's money, is responded to as if Rush was running a concentration camp?
The America that defeated Nazism had a saying; sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me.
Should I worry about Rush, or the Catholic Church, or "conservatives" picking up sticks and stones?
Or the liberal progressives, who spent the 60s & 70s telling women that being sexually loose was liberation and freedom; yet attack anyone who calls another an unkind name, as if they were a Nazi?
Is this what is meant by a woman having "control over her own body"? A slavery where I am forced to give money to Sandra so her "control over her own body" is to not control the urges of her own body?
This is, "I am woman, hear me roar!"...
Agree with you completely Kevin.
In the spirit of the Federalist Papers, pseudonyms allow for people to say things they later regret, wisdom and correction showing them they were wrong, and spare the family the humiliation of the behavior of their imperfect relation.
Pseudonyms also allow for personal attacks to lose effect thereby being more easily ignored and the points being asserted to more easily rise to the top.
Still, there are times we are called to stand up and be named. No matter how embarrassing for our family.
If anyone wants to understand just what is wrong in America today all that they need to do is read all off these comments.
To be sure, there are thoughtful, informed, and polite comments on both sides of the several issues that have been raised. But it would seem that majority of the comments are impolite, angry, ill informed, doctrinal (religious or political), and have sunk to the level of personal attacks.
And that is precisely the reason that we have so much trouble finding reasonable approches to solving our problems.
Until we become able to place principals above personalities we we are doomed to continue the incessant, destructive, and totally unproductive internal "warfare"in which we find ourselves today.
Unless we are able to change the tenor of our dialog will ALL lose in the end.
@ Colin
Yes, it would be nice if men were Vulcan's.
What is wrong with America today is not trouble finding reasonable approaches, it is the principals and spirit that define America are being fought over.
Jefferson, in a 1787 letter to William Smith, in reference to Shay's rebellion:
"Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusetts? And can history produce an instance of a rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
Colin, please step back from the hysterical girl cliff. All will not be lost.
Jeff Ward,
What is "Catholic Sharia Law"? This so called debate about Sandra Fluke was all orchestrated by the far left Democratic Party and others. You and many others fell for it hook, line and sinker. Sandra Fluke speaking on Capitol Hill was a complete waste of time and a well orchestrated diversion. This country has way to many problems much more important than birth control. This whole ordeal is about our freedoms, our way of life in America. Some very powerful people want to change the way we live in The United States of America and many other countries. My concern is my country The United States of America. These people want to challenge our separation of church and state. Once they set precedent with any religion in this case the Catholic Church then we no longer have separation of Church and State. Then the court can recognize other religous rules/laws such as Sharia Law. So you are either one of them or one of us. Being one of them means you live without freedoms being one of us you get to choose the way you want to live your life (within reason). If we lived under Sharia Law Sandra Fluke would never have been addressing Capitol Hill she wouldn't even been able to be a student at Georgetown or anywhere else. Start getting the facts correct before you take sides. Your opinion is one thing. Our freedoms are going to be taken away if people don't understand how nice it is and start appreciating what we have and how important U.S. Constitution is.
