Hinsdale Drivers Adjust to New Garfield Stop Signs

As of Tuesday afternoon, no citations and five warnings had been given at the intersection of Garfield and 1st streets.

Hinsdale hasn’t had trouble getting used to its newest set of stop signs.

The Hinsdale Police Department had not issued any citations to drivers for disobeying the Garfield Street stop signs at 1st Street on the east side of downtown as of Tuesday afternoon, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. The Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees approved the signs on Jan. 24 after a traffic study justified them based on sight obstructions.

Wodka said Tuesday afternoon that police have stopped five drivers at the intersection, but all were let off with warnings.

“We’re pleased to see a high compliance rate,” Wodka said. “We’ve also received feedback that [the placement of the signs] was a good decision.”

The deputy chief said there has been no negative feedback from the community.

The main concern of the police department when it recommended the signs was that southbound Garfield traffic during peak hours would back up to the railroad tracks and cause issues, but Wodka said there have been no backups so far.

“Preliminarily, it appears [the signs] are working as well as they should,” Wodka said.

The police department has also acted on the recommendation of trustee Doug Geoga, who said at the January meeting that police should make more of an effort to regulate delivery-truck parking at the intersection.

Before, trucks delivering to Dips & Dogs and other nearby businesses would double-park on the northwest corner of 1st and Garfield, causing sight obstructions for other vehicles. Wodka said the police department has directed the truck drivers to park in the Dips & Dogs/Fuller’s Home & Hardware parking lot.

So far, because deliveries are typically made during the morning hours, it has not caused issues in the lot.
