Michelle Obama's 'Kids State Dinner' Guest List Includes Hinsdale Boy, 12
Jonah Schaik is one of more than 50 winners of the first lady's Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and will visit the White House on Aug. 20.
Hinsdale resident Jonah Schaik, 12, will visit the White House for a special dinner with First Lady Michelle Obama as one of about 50 winners of Obama's Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, according to this Doings Hinsdale story published online on July 31.
The contest was open to 8- to 12-year-olds all over the country who submitted a dish that was judged based on its nutritional value, taste, creativity, affordability, and the story behind it, according to The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge's website. Jonah's winning dish, according to the site, was Jonah's Pesto Pasta.
"Winners were selected from over 1,200 delicious entries, which were evaluated at D.C. Central Kitchen by a panel of judges that included White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass; Chef José Andrés; Marshall and Alex Reid, authors of Portion Size Me; Epicurious Editor-in-Chief Tanya Steel; and representatives from the USDA and the Department of Education," the contest's website reads.
Winners were notified on July 16. According to The Doings, Schaik will be in D.C. from Aug. 19-21. The Kids' "State Dinner" event will be held on Aug. 20.
The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge's website says there were 56 winners: one from each state and one each from Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the District of Columbia.
