PREVIEW: Hinsdale Central Hosts St. Charles North in Friday's Football Opener

High school football is back and the Red Devils open up against St. Charles North

Who: Hinsdale Central (0-0) vs. St. Charles North (0-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Dickinson Field at Hinsdale Central, 5500 S. Grant St.

Last year: Hinsdale Central went to the playoffs with a 6-4 record in 2011 under first-year head coach Rich Tarka. Tarka is back this year, and so is returning starting quarterback Brian Owens, who sat out the Red Devils' first-round playoff loss to Mount Carmel last November.

The Sun-Times ranked Hinsdale Central No. 16 in the state going into this 2012 season.

St. Charles North had a rough year following an opening-night loss to the Red Devils. They finished the season 2-7.

This 2012 season will be the last for head coach Mark Gould, according to the Daily Herald, who quoted the coach as saying the North Stars' strength is their speed.

"Another is the seven returning offensive starters including 6-foot-6, 275-pound junior left tackle Chase Gianacakos, one of the top recruits of the Class of 2014," the Herald's Aug. 23 story reads. "Like tight end Garrett Johnson and linebacker Reece Conroyd, he attended college one-day camps this summer.

"Adding excitement to an offense that shifts to a spread scheme under new offensive coordinator Jared McCall is the return of senior running back George Edlund, who paved over Elgin with a team-record 286 yards rushing then hit Larkin with 178 in St. Charles North’s sole wins last year."

Football is back, everyone!
