Chicago Man Charged With Hinsdale Armed Robbery Makes Deal, Pleads Guilty
David Quevedo was arrested in July after he implied he had a weapon while attempting to steal watches from The Clock & Watch Shop of Hinsdale.
A Chicago man initially charged with attempted robbery at the Clock & Watch Shop of Hinsdale pleaded guilty on Aug. 23 to one felony burglary count as part of a deal with prosecutors, court records show.
David Quevedo was arrested in July after he went into the store, implied he had a weapon and demanded watches from the clerk. The 62-year-old woman working at the store began screaming and Quevedo fled without any merchandise, but was stopped by onlookers who heard the commotion.
The Hinsdale Police Department honored one of the citizens who tracked down Quevedo.
Quevedo was sentenced to 90 days in DuPage County Jail, with credit for half that amount as time served, put on 24 months of probation, and ordered to stay away from the store. Prosecutors dropped two attempted robbery counts as part of the plea agreement, documents state.
After fleeing the store that Tuesday morning, Quevedo was followed by several witnesses, two of whom—Richard Dynis and Laura O'Neill—caught up to him and restrained him in a parking lot in the 100 block of west 1st Street. Officers arrived soon after and took Quevedo into custody without incident.
When Dynis was honored at the Aug. 14 Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees meeting, Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said Quevedo probably wouldn't have been caught without the citizens' assitance.
“Mr. Dynis could have run, he could have hid, but he put his own safety in jeopardy by pursuing this person,” Bloom said. “It’s certainly not something we would encourage someone to do, but he has certainly earned our appreciation.”
Quevedo was not in possession of any weapons and none were found in the area of the offense. Nevertheless, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said, the implication was enough for the armed robbery charge.
