Census: Hinsdale Bests State Rates on Income, Home Ownership, Employment

Clarendon Hills also topped Illinois averages in the above categories, according to the latest U.S. Census numbers released last week.

The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday released estimates from its American Community Survey, which provides local statistics for the combined years from 2007 to 2011 on everything from housing to employment to marital status in communities throughout the country.

The numbers look good for Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills. Both towns have estimated median household incomes that are significantly higher the Illinois average. Hinsdale's is near $159,000 and Clarendon Hills' is around $103,000, while the state average is $56,576.

Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills have homeownership rates of 83.2 percent and 79.4 percent, respectively, which are higher than the state average of 68.7 percent.

The median value of an owner-occupied home in Hinsdale is $831,700 and it's $571,100 in Clarendon Hills. Both of those figures dwarf the state median of $198,500.

On the employment front, of Hinsdale's nearly 16,293 residents, 11,809 are ages 16 and older. More than 6,800 people make up the village's labor force, according to the data, and 6,430 of those individuals are employed. Only 432 reported being unemployed.

More than 4,900 Hinsdale residents, or about 41.9 percent of those age 16 and over, stated they are not in the labor force.

In Clarendon Hills, 6,090 of 8,486 residents are 16 and older, and 3,959 residents make up the town's labor force. Of those, 3,784 are employed. Only 175 members of the labor force say they're unemployed.

About 2,100, or 35 percent, of Clarendon Hills residents 16 and over are not in the labor force.

The five-year estimates are based on interviews with almost two million housing units nationwide from 2007 through 2011. By pooling several years of survey responses, the American Community Survey generates detailed statistical portraits for small areas. The groupings of five-year estimates are released annually.

“By telling the story of our towns and neighborhoods, the American Community Survey helps planners locate schools and firehouses,” said Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau’s acting director. “Thanks to the cooperation of the public, the Census Bureau produces reliable, quality statistical information for even small communities in the U.S. That’s why it’s so important for households that are selected to participate in the ACS to respond.”

American Community Survey Data can be found on the Census Bureau's QuickFacts site, and browsers can also use “Easy Stats,” a tool that allows users to build their own tables by selecting a desired topic and geography. Early next year, the Census Bureau will release “Dwellr,” a mobile app designed to put Census Bureau statistics directly in the hands of new users in an engaging way.
